Calling

What is Teams calling?

Pretty simply – it is the ability to make calls, either voice or video.

Who can I call?

At the moment, you will be able to call other Teams users.

Why can’t I call normal phones or mobile phones?

At the moment, we do not have the connections between Teams and the ‘normal’ phone system. In the coming months, we will be looking into whether or not using Teams as part of the phone system would be worthwhile.

Why would I want to use it?

  • Just find the person you want to call, and select call – no need to look up or remember their number
  • You can use Teams on multiple devices and make and receive your calls on whichever device you happen to be using.
  • It is easy to start with a chat, then turn that into a voice (or video) call.
  • You can see whether the person you’re calling is available in Teams before calling them.
  • Often, the audio quality will be better than a phone call on an older phone.

What else would we get if we used Teams as part of the phone system?

  • The ability to make calls to and receive calls from ‘normal’ phones / mobile phones
  • Voicemail, including delivery of the messages to your email. It may also have transcription, where the voicemail tries to transcribe the content of the message into text.
  • The ability to easily forward your calls to another phone, or to have it ‘simultaneously ring’ your mobile
  • Caller ID
  • Standard phone things – e.g. transfers, multi-party calling
  • Call pickup groups
