A Progress Bar for Otago Capture

Otago Capture was upgraded over the weekend and I’d like to point out one of the small but very useful improvements that has been made to this system.

Many papers will upload recordings they have made to Otago Capture so they can be viewed by their students using Blackboard or Moodle. This includes distance papers recording their classes on the Zoom Web Conferencing tool.

To do this a user would select Media Import, then choose their file and wait for it to be uploaded.  However, they would not know how that upload is going until it was finished. This could cause issues if they are uploading a very large file or are not in an area with particularly fast internet.

The new Uploading Status Bar

The new Uploading Progress Bar

With the latest upgrade to Otago Capture users will now be able to see an upload progress bar. Underneath the “Choose file” button will be a grey bar that gets longer as the file uploads.

If you want to use the Media Import feature just follow these steps:

  1. Log in to https://capture.otago.ac.nz
  2. Navigate to Echoes->Media Import.
  3. Click on Choose File and browse to the file location, click Open.
  4. Click on Upload
  5. Wait for the grey status bar to fully load.
  6. If there is anything wrong with the upload you will see red crosses and an explanation of what went wrong. Otherwise you will see green ticks meaning everything has gone well.
  7. Fill in the correct Term. Depending how many Capture Sections you are associated with you may not get the option to choose a Course.
  8. Choose a Section, this is usually the name of the paper, ie “ABCD101/DN/I/2016”
  9. And finally give the file a time, date and title. You can also add a description. Click next.
  10. Choose a product group to display to the students. This will usually be either Audio and Screen or Audio and Camera.

This is just one feature of Otago Capture, if you want to know more please contact the ITS Service Desk, comment below or visit the Otago Capture Help Site at https://help.otago.ac.nz/capture/
