What is Blackboard?
Blackboard is a learning management system, which contains a range of tools to support teaching and learning. We’ve been running Blackboard at Otago since about 2000. Some features are:
- Uploading/managing files
- Tests, Surveys and Grades
- Simple Blogs, Wikis and Journals
- Anti-plagiarism checking.

What we’re currently working on
2015 has been a busy year for Blackboard. We had a major upgrade at the end of 2014, and as a result of that we’ve been spending a lot of time supporting staff and students as they adapt to the new features, and also working on making sure that Blackboard runs smoothly.
We looked at updating Blackboard to the October 2014 version but due to some issue we encountered during the update process we have decided to stay on the April 2014 version.
What’s coming up
Here’s what’s on the horizon:
- April 2014 Cumulative Update Patch
This is the latest Blackboard small update to the April 2014 version of Blackboard We’re currently looking at the features and fixes contained in this Cumulative Update to see if we should update to this before Summer School 2016.
- Building Block Updates
We will be updating all our Building Blocks (SafeAssign, Grade Centre etc) over the summer break.
