Hi I’m William Pelet and I joined Sally’s group to complete my BSc(Hons) in 2018. I had a fantastic time in her diverse group, which boasted students from around the world. This always made for interesting conversation, new techniques and a broad spectrum of skill-sets. It is a group that has a great balance between freedom of research and direction when required, which helped me to grow as a scientist that was confident in making well informed and efficient decisions. I learned the fundamentals of chemistry and the scientific method in depth in Sally’s lab which is a testament to her leadership and group.
The skills learned in my time in the Brooker Bunch are all relevant to my current job at Syft Technologies. As a scientist in industry, I need to be able to make informed, justified and commercially viable decisions, while explaining myself to co-workers and clients that may not come from a science background. I genuinely feel that my time in Sally’s group equipped me with these required skills, which made the transition from academia to industry smooth. I would highly recommend interested students, who are keen to be busy and work hard while also having a great time, to join Sally’s group. I’m very grateful for my experience at Otago University.
