CEFGroup Director Comments on On-Farm Methane Emissions

CEFGroup Director, climate finance expert Ivan Diaz-Rainey, was invited to speak at today’s RNZ Rural News. Ivan says that the importance of cutting methane emissions seems to have been lost in proposals for how to price on-farm emissions. Two options for how farmers could pay for on-farm emissions have been released for consideration by He Waka Eke Noa – Primary Sector Climate Action Partnership. In both options, the price for methane is seperate from the carbon price, with the sector proposing the methane price should be lower to take into account that it is a shorter-lived gas. However, Ivan says this is at odds with commentary at the recent COP26 Summit in Glasgow where world leaders said urgent cuts to methane emissions were required. Ivan says a scheme that sets an affordable price for farmers won’t drive change, which will just make the transition the sector has to make later down the line more severe and abrupt.

CEFGroup Postdoctoral Fellow Shares Journey from Vietnam to a Marsden Grant

Our very own Quyen Nguyen recently shared her journey from a small town in Vietnam to her research on Climate Finance.

She believes that people cannot solely rely on measurements of the past to determine the climate risk of the future and that this will be an exciting and meaningful area of research moving forward.

Last year, Quyen helped secure the first Marsden grant that the Accountancy & Finance Department has had in 15 years. Quyen’s research in Climate Finance, especially her modelling techniques in predicting carbon footprints using the machine learning approach, generated international attention and helped her secure a long-term relationship with the Australian start-up firm EMMI.
