Latest ANZIC Bulletin and last call for applications for Exp 377

Dear colleagues

Here is the link to the latest version of the ANZIC Bulletin with some emphasis on the the Australasian Workshop (nice article written by Catherine), which was a huge success. The organisers of the workshop, before and during it, were towers of strength. I expect the results to be more expeditions in our region in the years to come.

There is also a final call (deadline Monday 3rd July) for applicants for the hugely exciting Expedition 377 (Arctic Ocean Paleoceanography) . Do apply, or encourage others to apply. This expedition will drill Cenozoic sequences in the ocean that record spectacular changes in climate and the marine-non marine state, which were partly demonstrated by IODP Expedition 302, drilled in 2004 when sea ice cover was far greater. This is the chance of a lifetime to join a great historic expedition, and one would expect our Antarctic community to be very excited by it. The drilling will be in mid-2018, and the larger description and sampling science party in early 2019 in Bremen.

Apply for the ICDP Training Course on Continental Scientific Drilling Nov 2017

This message is forwarded from Thomas Wiersburg at GFZ Potsdam (ICDP).

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program, ICDP invites scientists from upcoming scientific drilling projects to apply for the

ICDP Training Course on Continental Scientific Drilling

to be held from November 5-10, 2017 either at Caernarfon (UK) nearby the ICDP-sponsored JET drilling project or at the Geocenter KTB in Windischeschenbach (Germany). This training course will touch upon all relevant aspects of continental scientific drilling, including project planning and management, pre-site surveys, drilling engineering, sample handling and storage, on-site studies, downhole logging, data management, and post-drilling measures. The training course is recommended for PhD students, post-docs and scientists involved in scientific drilling.

Deadline for application is August 18, 2017. Decisions will be communicated by end of August. Preference will be given to applicants involved in ICDP drilling projects, applicants from ICDP member countries, developing countries, and those from countries considering ICDP membership. For the successful candidates, expenses for travel, visa, meals and accommodation will be covered by ICDP. Applications should include a letter of interest, CV, and at least two letters of support.

Please send your application to icdp-outreach@gfz-potsdam.de

More information on ICDP training measures can be found at www.icdp-online.org/support/training/annual-training-course/

Please forward this message to potentially interested candidates.

Kind regards,

Thomas Wiersberg

Reminder: OAR Meeting Friday 10am Staff Club

Hi all. A reminder about Friday’s meeting (10am, Staff Club) to discuss Otago Core Analysis and Handling facilities:

Two topics to cover – facilities requirements and database requirements. Your input at this meeting will define what we end up with for the next few years so its very important you think about your requirements in advance. Continue reading

IODP/GeoDiscoveryNZ email list + Report to Division of Sciences by 30 May.

I’ve been asked by the NZ IODP/GeoDiscoveryNZ (formerly DrillNZ) office to update the email contact list to which they send things.
The list of people they currently email is below. It does not = the addressee list of this email, which also includes those of you who are on our ‘scientific.drilling@otago.ac.nz’ mailing list. Note that I usually duplicate the emails they send on the Otago Scientific Drilling Blog (as I will this one), and if you think you can keep up with news that way better then you don’t need to also be on this list.
If you want to be removed from the list, or added to it please email me personally by lunchtime tomorrow (Friday 26 May).

Also, we need to provide an updated report on Scientific Drilling-related activities to the Division of Sciences by 31 May. Can you please advise me by Weds 30 May of
1. Any Sci Drilling-related publications you have been involved in within the last year
2. Any workshops or drilling projects you have participated in
3. Any funding you have been awarded to work on data or samples from Scientifc Drilling projects, even if this is only a minor component of the funded project. Does not have to be an official IODP or ICDP project.
4. Any Sci Drilling outreach you have been involved with
5. Any new postgrads or postdocs working on drillcore

Otago Analytical Core Repository (OAR) – Meeting 2 June 10am.

Hi all

I’d like to pass on the excellent news that the Division of Sciences has agreed to support the proposed Otago Analytical Core Repository (OAR) from its Strategic Fund. That means that, for the next couple of years, we have some funds to establish an Otago-wide core database, and a centralised facility for doing work on core, for setting up some containers that we can use as science labs on drillsites, and for having a ‘transitional facility’ for potentially biologically-contaminated cores coming from overseas. There are also some funds there to support administrative and technical support.

Gary and I – with Bob Dagg’s assistance – are now working on the fine details of a budget – including precise costs from suppliers. We would like your feedback on this, and to have the opportunity to discuss the whole concept with you, and so invite you to meet with us on:

Friday 2 June, 10-11am in the Otago Uni Staff Club

We will circulate a proposed budget and plan in advance of this meeting.

Thanks
Virginia and Gary

Call for applications IODP Expedition 377: Arctic Ocean Paleoceanography (ArcOP)

Dear colleagues

We are now accepting ANZIC applications from scientists in our member institutions for scientific participation in an extremely exciting and innovative ECORD expedition in the Arctic Ocean with the offshore phase in the latter half of 2018. We are guaranteed one scientific place. The links in the attachment provide more scientific background. Opportunities exist for researchers (including graduate students) in all ocean drilling specialties. While other expertise may be considered, specialists in the following fields are required: sedimentology, paleontology, palynology, organic geochemistry, inorganic geochemistry, structural geology, paleomagnetics, microbiology, physical properties, geophysics, stratigraphic correlation and downhole logging. For the offshore phase of the expedition, we are particularly looking for the following fields: sedimentology, paleontology, organic geochemistry, inorganic geochemistry, microbiology, physical properties, and petrophysics/downhole logging.
The applicants will either be part of 1) the limited offshore party (European autumn 2018) and the onshore sampling party in Bremen in early 2019 or 2) the larger onshore sampling party. Please specify whether you are interested in the offshore-onshore or onshore-only aspects of the Expedition. Please note that there is no option to participate offshore-only. For the offshore phase of the expedition, they are particularly looking for the following fields: paleontology, sedimentology, organic geochemistry, inorganic geochemistry, physical properties, and petrophysics/downhole logging.

Call for applications for Chikyu Expedition 380: installing a downhole observatory

Dear colleagues

We are now accepting ANZIC applications from scientists in our member institutions for scientific participation in Chikyu expedition 380 NanTroSEIZE Stage 3: Frontal Thrust Long-Term Borehole Monitoring System (LTBMS) in late 2017. Opportunities exist only for observatory specialists and downhole logging specialists at this stage. The deadline for applications to ANZIC is 1 May.
Could senior scientists please ensure that this is widely circulated to relevant (often engineering) groups in their institutions.
Background
CDEX currently plans to implement IODP Expedition 380: NanTroSEIZE Stage 3: Frontal Thrust Long-Term Borehole Monitoring System (LTBMS) beginning on 23 October 2017. The main expedition goal is to drill and case a riserless hole at Site C0006 to at least ~500 meters below the sea floor (mbsf). IODP NanTroSEIZE Complex Drilling Project. The IODP Complex Drilling Project (CDP) known as the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) Project comprises multiple expeditions over a several-year period aimed at sampling and instrumenting the up-dip transition into the subduction seismogenic zone. Site C0006 will be the site of the third LTBMS installed for the NanTroSEIZE project.
