Thursday March 6th is fast approaching, and with it one of the Centre’s key days of the year, World Book Day.  This year we are pleased to host Robbie Burton, publisher and co-owner at Craig Potton Publishing, New Zealand’s largest independent publishing house. He will talk about the value and role of independent publishing in New Zealand, especially in this time of great change in the book industry. His talk is entitled, “A TIME TO THINK SMALL?: The value of independent publishing in New Zealand.”

The talk will be at 5:30 in Archway 2.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Lecture on Sir Walter Scott

Dr. Brian McMullin of Monash University and long-time editor of the Bulletin of the Bibliiographical Society of Australia and NZ will speak on “The Textual Condition of the Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley Novels.”

With the completion of the Edinburgh Edition of the Waverley Novels, which is based on the first editions, attention may now be turned to other editions with authorial warrant, notably the magnum opus edition of 1829–1833, which contains Scott’s final revisions.  The three novels to be discussed are The Pirate, The Betrothed and The Talisman.

His informal talk will take place from 3:30–4:30 in Central Library Seminar Room 3 on the first floor, and will be accompanied by drinks and nibbles.  All welcome.

Welcome to the New 2014 Centre for the Book Blog

This blog will list events and archive them as year progresses rather than manually revising both the events and archives web pages each time we update activities.

It also enables you to add an RSS feed to receive notifications of changes if you wish to be kept most up to date.  You are also able to leave comments about the events and we welcome feedback.

And finally, we apologise for the cancellation of Richard Overell’s talk in February.  He will still be in Dunedin if you were hoping to meet him, but his visit does not leave him time for a talk as well.  If you wish to meet with RIchard, just let me or Donald know and we’ll try to arrange a time that suits everyone.

We hope you like the new format, and wish you all the best  for 2014.
