For the winter months of 2012 the Hocken Library is using this image to promote the current exhibition &#8211; Ship Shape &#8211; an exhibition based on the idea of &#8220;portraits&#8221; of ships.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<table style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-rU0ycf0Z42s\/T5ZR2Z4Yd9I\/AAAAAAAAAJ4\/w6BQ1-d31QU\/s1600\/S12-057a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-rU0ycf0Z42s\/T5ZR2Z4Yd9I\/AAAAAAAAAJ4\/w6BQ1-d31QU\/s400\/S12-057a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\">Maheno in her building berth, 1905, Cameron Family Papers MS-1046\/422<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Maheno<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> was built by William Denny and Brothers at Dumbarton, Scotland but Dunedin was its home.\u00a0\u00a0 Joining the Union Steam Ship Company\u2019s fleet in 1905, the <i>Maheno<\/i> was the first turbine-powered ship to work the Trans-Tasman route.\u00a0 The vessel had a strong link with the University of Otago as well since the Ministry of Defence offered the institution surplus money from the Hospital Ships\u2019 Fund to build a hall for the military training of medical students in 1919.\u00a0 Maheno and Marama Hall (as it was originally called) was completed in 1923 and is now occupied by the Department of Music.\u00a0 A roll of honour in the foyer lists medical staff who served on the ships.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-MYD6_Pt25fI\/T5ZSAYmdEVI\/AAAAAAAAAKA\/_nSoFyHJ3Sk\/s1600\/Maheno.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-MYD6_Pt25fI\/T5ZSAYmdEVI\/AAAAAAAAAKA\/_nSoFyHJ3Sk\/s400\/Maheno.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"206\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Maheno\u2019s elegant profile was much admired, as were its comfortable and beautiful interiors.
