I spent my Easter break delving into a stack of issues of the Listener<\/em> (ranging between 1987 – 1990) found in the garage during a lockdown tidy up. With the sudden closure of Bauer Media Group this month\u00a0(the Listener’s<\/em>\u00a0most-recent publisher –\u00a0and\u00a0of many other household titles too, of course), I could only read with my Covid-19 glasses on.<\/p>\n

Below is a selection of ‘clippings’\u00a0assembled\u00a0to form a\u00a0narrative of this moment, derived from this lockdown\u00a0browsing. It is interesting to me how some images rhyme closely with issues now. (What lessons we\u00a0might take from\u00a0the economic turmoil of the late 1980s\u00a0when forming Covid responses, though, it is not my intention here\u00a0to suggest – as\u00a0useful as that subject\u00a0may be.) Others\u00a0clearly have nothing to do with Covid-19 but I can\u2019t help making associations.\u00a0My selection reflects, I hope, the exhausting omnipresence of the virus and its implications right now.<\/p>\n

*The Listener<\/em> was published from 1973 \u2013 2020. It succeeded the New Zealand Listener<\/em> (1939-1973); N.Z. Radio Record: and Home Journal<\/em> (1932-1939); The Radio Record<\/em> (1927 \u2013 1932). Hocken Collections has significant holdings of most of these titles. A former Hocken staff member posted this article<\/a> in 2014, on the occasion of the publication\u2019s 75th anniversary. Her conclusion still stands:<\/p>\n

“Unfortunately, Hocken\u2019s holdings of the Listener\u2019s<\/em> first three years are extremely sparse \u2026 and we also have many gaps in later years. We will gratefully receive donations of early issues \u2013 please contact the Periodicals team (serials.hocken@otago.ac.nz) for details of collection gaps.”<\/p>\n
