the Heinz company was founded; the Periodic Table published; and the Suez Canal opened.\u00a0 In New Zealand, we were in the middle of the Gold Rushes and the New Zealand Wars, and the University of Otago was founded.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_900\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/tetumuresearch\/files\/2019\/03\/megan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-900\" class=\"wp-image-900 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/tetumuresearch\/files\/2019\/03\/megan-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/tetumuresearch\/files\/2019\/03\/megan-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/tetumuresearch\/files\/2019\/03\/megan.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Megan P\u014dtiki<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080\">This year the Australasian Victorian Studies Association and the Centre for Research on Colonial Culture are co-hosting a conference of the theme of <strong>1869<\/strong> here at Otago on 25-29 September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of Te Tumu&#8217;s staff members, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/te-tumu\/staff\/otago083468.html\">Megan P\u014dtiki<\/a> will be presenting a keynote lecture.\u00a0 Other keynote speakers include <a href=\"https:\/\/helenpearson.info\/\">Dr. Helen Pearson<\/a>\u00a0(Chief Magazine Editor, of the prestigious periodical <em>Nature <\/em>which first appeared in 1869) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marionthain.org\/\">Professor Marion Thain<\/a>\u00a0(of King\u2019s College, London).\u00a0 Specially invited speakers include novelist, essayist and literary scholar\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tinamakereti.com\/\">Dr Tina Makereti<\/a> (Massey University), whose most recent novel,\u00a0<em>The Imaginary Lives of James P\u014dneke<\/em>, was long-listed\u00a0for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards;
