{"id":313,"date":"2015-04-02T10:50:12","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T21:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/tetumuresearch\/?p=313"},"modified":"2015-04-02T10:50:12","modified_gmt":"2015-04-01T21:50:12","slug":"vicki-grieves-seminar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/tetumuresearch\/vicki-grieves-seminar\/","title":{"rendered":"Vicki Grieves Seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Dr Victoria Grieves<\/span> (University of Sydney) will be giving the next Te Tumu\u00a0seminar on <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff\">&#8220;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Working against nature: the plough as symbol of western progress and icon of Northern domination&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will be held in Cen3 (Central Library), on\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Wednesday 15\u00a0April 2015, 2.30pm \u2013 3.30pm. \u00a0Everyone is welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Abstract:\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">This paper argues that while the idea of the plough and of ploughing is embedded in western theory and discourse as an inherently good concept, the introduction of the plough and the beginnings of agriculture as we know it today is likely to be the beginning of the epoch now known as the Anthropocene.\u00a0 While\u00a0<i>the plough\u00a0<\/i>embodies all of the values of hard work, of thought and creativity, of respectability and of progress in western thought, as a tool of progress it has been used as a means of colonising and securing lands.\u00a0 The impact of this has been devastation to indigenous people and also to the natural world.\u00a0 Ploughing has had the effect of creating borders, of delineating colonised lands and enslaving men and animals to pull the blades through the soil.\u00a0 When recognised as such, the ploughs themselves have figured prominently in various ways in poor white and Indigenous dissent.\u00a0 Thus the plough works\u00a0<i>against\u00a0<\/i>nature rather than with nature.\u00a0 It has been convincingly theorised as an object of death and destruction of the natural world (Serres) and its impact on the collective issues that comprise climate change and the Anthropocene is profound.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Victoria Grieves (University of Sydney) will be giving the next Te Tumu\u00a0seminar on &#8220;Working against nature: the plough as symbol of western progress and icon of Northern domination&#8221;.
