Te Tumu Research Committee has TWO great seminars coming up on Monday 10th October.<\/strong><\/span> \u00a0Everyone is welcome to attend these events.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>In the morning, Professor Rangi\u00a0Mataamua<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(Ng\u0101i T\u016bhoe) will present “Ko t\u0101tai arorangi hei kaiarataki i te r\u0101: a M\u0101ori division of time”.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This presentation will explore a M\u0101ori understanding of time, taking into account the movements of celestial bodies, ecological factors local environmental phenomena and our unique cultural beliefs. \u00a0The title for this lecture is “Ko t\u0101tai arorangi hei kaiarataki i te r\u0101”, meaning the astronomical bodies rule over our daily activities.<\/em><\/p>\n

This will be held in GS1 (ground floor Te Tumu) starting at 10am.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon, Miriama Cribb<\/span><\/strong> (Te \u0100tihaunui-a-P\u0101p\u0101rangi) will be “Unpacking some truths of Te Awarenesses Tupua Act 2017)”<\/strong><\/span>. \u00a0Miriama is a PhD student at Massey University.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>In 2017, the Te Awa Tupua (Whanganui River Claims Settlement) Act\u00a0was passed, formalising a new way to view, use and understand Te\u00a0Awa Tupua\u2014the Whanganui River. Five years since its passing and\u00a0there continues to be a lot more unpacking needed to fully\u00a0comprehend and understand the Te Awa Tupua Act and the drivers\u00a0and intentions informing its design. This seminar attempts to unpack\u00a0some of the truths of the Te Awa Tupua Act by debunking some\u00a0common misconceptions and reminding ourselves how the act differs\u00a0from other legislative, political, managerial, social, cultural, and\u00a0governance arrangements. The reflections shared here have been\u00a0collated throughout Miriama\u2019s time as a former trustee of Ng\u0101 T\u0101ngata\u00a0Tiaki (the post-settlement governance entity for the Whanganui River),\u00a0a doctoral student studying the implementation of Te Awa Tupua Act\u00a0in non-Indigenous organisations, and as a hap\u016b (sub-tribe) member\u00a0engaged in community affairs at a local level.<\/em><\/p>\n
