{"id":17,"date":"2024-04-19T08:53:05","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T20:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/studentsupport\/?page_id=17"},"modified":"2026-06-03T10:58:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T22:58:12","slug":"health","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/studentsupport\/health\/","title":{"rendered":"UOC Student Care Hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UOC Student Care Hub <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Student\u00a0Care\u00a0Hub provides a single point of contact for<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>your requests for support and information and is available to all\u00a0students enrolled at\u00a0UOC, regardless of your course of study, or where you are located.<\/p>\n<p>You can request support from the\u00a0UOC\u00a0Student\u00a0Care\u00a0hub\u00a0by completing a <a href=\"https:\/\/redcap.link\/5u57zdlx\">request form<\/a>. Our email is <a href=\"mailto:UOCStudentCare@otago.ac.nz\">UOCStudentCare@otago.ac.nz<\/a>. You are welcome to email us at any time. Please be aware that for non-urgent requests, we will reply to you within 2-3 working days.<\/p>\n<p>Sheila Mark<em>\u00a0<\/em>is our\u00a0Student\u00a0Care\u00a0Hub\u00a0coordinator who will receive your<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>email requests and coordinate a response with our\u00a0UOC\u00a0team. Sheila has a background in counselling support and is independent of your academic course teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0UOC\u00a0Student\u00a0Care\u00a0hub\u00a0is designed to be available to you <em>in addition <\/em>to your existing support contacts. We can help you by text message, phone\/video call, email or by meeting with you in person \u2013 whatever works best for you and your situation.<\/p>\n<p>The types of requests include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic and learning support<\/li>\n<li>Leave<\/li>\n<li>Financial<\/li>\n<li>Mental wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>Queer\/rainbow support<\/li>\n<li>Accommodation\/flatting<\/li>\n<li>Harassment\/sexual harassment<\/li>\n<li>Racism<\/li>\n<li>Food request<\/li>\n<li>Relationships<\/li>\n<li>Personal safety<\/li>\n<li>Safety of other<\/li>\n<li>Homesickness or grief<\/li>\n<li>M\u0101ori\u00a0student\u00a0support<\/li>\n<li>Pacific\u00a0student\u00a0support<\/li>\n<li>International\u00a0student\u00a0support<\/li>\n<li>Other [you can specify or describe]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your request will be coordinated and involve the most appropriate staff members at the University. All requests will be managed in the strictest confidence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GP Scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Christchurch Doctors provide a General Practice service to full-time domestic students at the University of Otago, Christchurch.<\/p>\n<p>International students can visit the Christchurch Doctors as a casual patient, and lodge a claim with their insurance provider.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When making an appointment, you must indicate that you are a University of Otago Christchurch student patient and also which doctor you wish to see.<\/li>\n<li>The arrangements with The Christchurch Doctors follow negotiation with students and are covered in the Student Services Fee paid by full-time postgraduate students located in Christchurch.<\/li>\n<li>All new patients must have a nurse appointment. This is an appointment where all of the patient&#8217;s history, immunisations, medication, screenings and classifications are checked to ensure the patient&#8217;s file is correct before seeing the GP.\u00a0 The cost for a nurse consultation is $35 which is paid by the University in full.\u00a0 If you choose to see the GP at the same visit, you will be charged in full as the university only covers one visit per day. Please enquire at the Christchurch Doctor&#8217;s reception when booking you appointment if you have any questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thechristchurchdoctors.co.nz\/\">Visit the Christchurch Doctors website<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other General Practitioners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other General Practitioners may be used by full-time postgraduates located in Christchurch on a case-by-case basis with approval by the relevant Associate Dean.<\/p>\n<p>To organise this, please contact: alice.lepetit@otago.ac.nz for approval<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Services Card<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident you may be eligible for a Community Services Card.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workandincome.govt.nz\/products\/a-z-benefits\/community-services-card.html#null\">Visit the Work and Income website for more information on the Community Services Card<\/a><\/p>\n<p>International students are not eligible for a community services card and should request a receipt and lodge a claim with their health insurer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non-subsidised services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following services will not be subsidised by the UOC but are available from the health centre:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>House calls and after-hours<\/li>\n<li>Diving medical assessment<\/li>\n<li>Insurance report<\/li>\n<li>Immigration Medical<\/li>\n<li>Insurance medical<\/li>\n<li>Well person checks<\/li>\n<li>Depo Provera injection<\/li>\n<li>IUD insertion<\/li>\n<li>Wart removal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For after-hours medical care or pharmacy:<\/p>\n<p>24-Hour Surgery<br \/>\n401 Madras Street<br \/>\nTel\u00a0<a href=\"tel:+6433657777\">+64 3 365 7777<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.24hoursurgery.co.nz\/\">Visit the 24-Hour Surgery website for information<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an emergency, ring an ambulance by dialling\u00a0<a href=\"tel:111\">111<\/a>, or proceed straight to the Emergency Department of the Christchurch Public Hospital, 2 Riccarton Avenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Puawaitanga &#8211; Online Counselling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Puawaitanga is a phone and web-based service to support Kiwis to improve their emotional well-being \u2013 their hauora. The service is an alternative to face-to-face counselling for Kiwis who are struggling but face challenges in accessing traditional counselling. All staff are trained professionals and counselling sessions are private, confidential and free. The pantry will include lunch and breakfast basics to support our students. Common items that will be available include toast bread and spreads, as well as cheese and tinned foods to make toasted sandwiches. There will also be a supply of breakfast cereals and fruit.<\/p>\n<p>The food pantry is open to ALL UOC students 24\/7 in the lower ground common room, 2 Riccarton Ave, and during business hours in the level 5 kitchen, 2 Riccarton Ave.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact <a href=\"mailto:sheila.mark@otago.ac.nz\">sheila.mark@otago.ac.nz<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prayer Room<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UOC offers a prayer and meditation room for people of all faiths and none. It is located on level 7 of the main UOC building, at 2 Riccarton Ave. The room is mostly for quiet prayer and meditation.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, there is a Chapel that welcomes all faiths located in the main Hospital building.
