Instead of embedding the images I just link to them. As more images are added to my .ai file the file size doesn\u2019t get much bigger. Using links is better for performance, and is more flexible.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, if you are collaborating with other people it can be a bit annoying getting documents sent to you without the linked images. If you prefer to embed images in your .ai document then you really need to downsample these images so that the file size does not get too out of hand.<\/p>\n<p>You could do this in photoshop or another raster editor. But this may take a while, and it\u2019s not always obvious what resolution you require.<\/p>\n<h2>The basic method for downsampling images in your illustrator document<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif;font-style: normal\">Select an image and go to <\/span><strong>Object&gt;Rasterize\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif;font-style: normal\">and choose the resolution you want downsample to. i.e. 300ppi.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<div>This does not work with multiple images selected: they will get merged together.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;font-weight: bold\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Using the links panel to speed up going through all of your images<\/span><\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>To see a list of all the images in your document go to <strong>Window&gt;Links<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now you can go through the images one by one and rasterise them.<\/li>\n<li>Select an image in the list then click on the <strong>go to link<\/strong> button to select it in the document.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-518\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image23.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"109\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Isolating images that have clipping masks<\/h2>\n<p>If you rasterise an image that has a clipping mask then you will get an image that is the same size as the original but is white or transparent for every area outside the clipping mask.
