Before you try to make your own you should read this page:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Grid reference systems: What are they?\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/2013\/09\/11\/grid-reference-systems-what-are-they\/\">Grid reference systems: What are they?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Making a grid reference system<\/h2>\n<p>For any map you can make your own grid reference system, so that you can refer to any position in the text of your document. If you have more than one map, then label your map sheets and include that in the grid references.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use an existing coordinate system such as NZTM.<\/li>\n<li>You first need to set the grid interval to a multiple of 10 such as 10,000m, 1000m, 100m, 10m. Leave the first two numbers to the left of the trailing zeros only. For example:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>1512000, 1513000\u2026 becomes 12, 13\u2026<\/p>\n<p>1512100, 1512200\u2026 becomes 21, 22\u2026<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You should label the full numbers in at least one corner.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Making a Grid reference system using ArcGIS<\/h2>\n<p>You can use ArcGIS to make grid reference systems for any map.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong>View&gt;Data Frame Properties&gt;Grids Tab<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image61.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-487\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image61.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image61.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image61-177x300.png 177w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click on <strong>New Grid<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Measured Grid<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Choose your interval e.g. 1000m<\/li>\n<li>Make the x and y interval the same.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image71.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-488\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image71.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"91\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Click through to finish.<\/li>\n<li>Select the grid and choose properties<\/li>\n<li>Go to the Labels tab<\/li>\n<li>Select Corner Label as the label type.<\/li>\n<li>Click on Additional properties<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image81.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-489\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image81.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image81.png 364w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image81-300x272.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image81-329x300.png 329w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In the <strong>Corner labels<\/strong> tab you can set where full corner labels will appear.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Principal digits<\/strong> tab you can set how many principal digits appear and how many base digits appear<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image91.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-490\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image91.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image91.png 363w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/si-geology\/files\/2013\/09\/image91-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Leave principal digits at 2. The base digits correspond to the number of digits from the right hand side. If your interval is<strong> 1000m<\/strong> this should be set to<strong> 4<\/strong>, for<strong> 100m<\/strong> this should be <strong>3 <\/strong>and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Below is an example of a map covering only Port Chalmers, Dunedin with a 100m grid and a grid reference system. In this table you should provide:\n<ul>\n<li>the locality ID<\/li>\n<li>full grid references (i.e. NZTM)<\/li>\n<li>grid reference system numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All about how to make grid reference systems.
