About the project

In a pivotal moment for family ownership of rural land, this project takes stock of the pros and cons of the dominant historic model of land transfer in New Zealand. Along with in-depth archival research, we will interview a number of families in Taieri and Hokianga. We are interested in hearing from families who have a long-standing history of ownership in either district. Please contact us here.

Aims and outputs

This study will provide rural communities with a forum for discussing an issue that presents difficulties for many farming families. The primary output will be a book that significantly extends our understanding of the history of land and inheritance in New Zealand, and tells the stories of the Taieri and Hokianga families who have participated in the study.

Project funding

The project is supported by a prestigious Marsden ‘Fast-Start’ research grant. The Marsden Fund is a contestable research fund established by the New Zealand Government in 1994 to fund excellent fundamental research, and is administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand.
