Does science comedy work as a tool for communicating science effectively to a public audience.<\/p>\n<p>In this short blog I make no claims or draw any conclusions.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/ouassa\/files\/2020\/10\/646-our-list-of-very-funny-science-jokes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2611 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/ouassa\/files\/2020\/10\/646-our-list-of-very-funny-science-jokes-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nRather we are just going to dip our toes into the world of science comedy by looking at a few examples of `comedic science\u2019 and let you come to your own conclusions as to whether you think comedy can be a tool to enhancing understanding\u00a0 of science in a public audience.<\/p>\n<p>Do science comedians rely on a pre-knowledge of science and\/or a specific topic?<\/p>\n<p><strong>How<\/strong>\u00a0does\/could\/ comedy enhance the understanding &amp; support for science in a non-scientific public audience?<\/p>\n<p>Check out some of these science comedians and more and you decide<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r-iP5dh54T8&amp;list=WL&amp;index=4&amp;t=163s\"><strong>Science Laughs :Brian Malow<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e7DkeQ0roAM\"><strong>&#8216;A Virus Walks Into a Bar&#8230;&#8217; and Other Science Jokes <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4laFEFl4FLs\"><strong>Scientist Turned Comedian: Tim Lee<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nHisX3P9a80&amp;list=PLWC0h5ZwSy0VMaYZufS34MSlzG6me2BwH&amp;index=8\">Science Comedian Vince Ebert | Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uDYba0m6ztE\">Science doesn&#8217;t know everything: Dara O&#8217;Briain<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of the above a background in science- Dara O\u2019Briain\u00a0 for example has a degree in mathematics and theoretical physics from University College Dublin and besides stand-up comedy has presented a number of science shows for BBC including\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7J89H3dSelg\">School of Hard Sums<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL5A4nPQbUF8A9CyXi5j5orDACo7arcs2W\">Dara \u00d3 Briain&#8217;s Science Club<\/a><\/em><strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pu7yQIlJLUw\"><strong>Sneaking Science into Stand-Up: Kasha Patel<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nNASA Science Writer, stand-up comedian and founder of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC4j2P5daDNFgZ9CQyTFCKgw\">DC Science Comedy<\/a>\u2019 Kasha Patel actually researches the effectiveness of her own science comedy by analysing over 500 of her science jokes as she explains in her 2019 TEDx talk.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to home Andrew Scott from\u00a0 Otago University School of Science Communication looked at Science comedy\u00a0 for his Master\u2019s degree \u00a0entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourarchive.otago.ac.nz\/handle\/10523\/2296\"> \u201c<em>Funnily Serious: Using Comedy\u00a0 to communicate Science\u201d<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 part of which included a\u00a0\u00a0 comedic science film entitled <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/55558054\"><em>T<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/55558054\"><em>angled<\/em><\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/55558054\"><em><strong> Waters<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/em><\/a>looking at the use of ant-shark nets along the Dunedin coastline. <em>(Maybe I shouldn\u2019t have put this in ahead of possible beach visit at upcoming December Camp!<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Want to dive further in the world of Science comedy?<br \/>\nCheck out \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/crastina.se\/links\/science-comedy\/\">Crastina\u2019s International List of Science Comedians<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, if you come across an example of science comedy that you think does a really good job of enhancing understanding and\/or support for science let me know in the comments.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy and good luck with your upcoming NCEA external exams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre>                                             Graphic:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stemmayhem.com\/funny-science-jokes\/\">https:\/\/www.stemmayhem.com\/funny-science-jokes\/\u00a0<\/a><\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026&#8230;..can science comedy also be an effective tool\u00a0 for \u00a0enhancing \u00a0understanding and support for science?
