Then its mission was to explore the outer planets. Radio signals will take the best part of a day to get back us from there! How many near misses with asteroids, meteors and comets large and small has it had on its travels? What wonders\u00a0it\u00a0 must have `spied&#8217; &#8211; If only it had eyes.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-24026153\">http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-24026153<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Time then to remember\u00a0 and pay tribute to\u00a0 Kiwi \u00a0Bill Pickering &#8211; Sir William Hayward Pickering.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/ouassa\/files\/2013\/09\/pickering.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1745\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/ouassa\/files\/2013\/09\/pickering.jpg\" alt=\"  A young will pickering standing next to  model rocket\" width=\"152\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like many OUASSA students he grew up in rural New Zealand- Havelock at top of South Island in Bill&#8217;s case.\u00a0\u00a0 Educated at Wellington College he ended up in America as part of the `Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)\u00a0 at Pasedana California and\u00a0 then onto\u00a0 the \u00a0space programme in the 1950&#8217;s<br \/>\n&#8220;<em>From a choice of three NASA space programs, manned space flight, Earth satellites and exploration of the solar system, Pickering opted for the latter. He would take JPL where none had gone before, into deep space to carry out NASA\u2019s massive program for the exploration of the solar system and its planets&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>&#8220;Accept the Light (of knowledge) and pass it on&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>was the motto of his\u00a0 beloved Wellington College.
