Their data service now incorporates terrain, street maps and satellite imagery.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/openotago\/files\/2014\/05\/Capture1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-509 aligncenter\" alt=\"Screen shot of LINZ web site\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/openotago\/files\/2014\/05\/Capture1.jpg\" width=\"335\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/openotago\/files\/2014\/05\/Capture1.jpg 1677w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/openotago\/files\/2014\/05\/Capture1-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/openotago\/files\/2014\/05\/Capture1-1024x561.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/openotago\/files\/2014\/05\/Capture1-500x274.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><\/a>CC BY &#8211; LINZ Data Service<\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s literally terabytes of it, covering around 95% of the country, which you can download or, if you need more than 3GB, have couriered to you. \u00a0In a <a title=\"Government press release on aerial imagery release\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beehive.govt.nz\/release\/aerial-imagery-now-online-reuse\" target=\"_blank\">press statement<\/a>\u00a0Land information minister Maurice Williamson said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cReleasing publicly held aerial imagery for reuse has the potential to create cost savings for the public sector and generate economic benefits for the private sector.\u00a0Imagery can be used to improve productivity in agriculture and forestry, and can be used in construction, engineering, disaster recovery planning, and land and asset management.\u00a0Making aerial imagery available is in line with the government\u2019s goal to make more publicly held data accessible to as many people as possible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It also means whenever you have a student asking \u00a0where they can get a map or overhead image of somewhere in New Zealand, you&#8217;ll know where to send them for an open access one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week Land Information NZ (LINZ) &#8211; which has been leading the way in open access government data for some time &#8211; announced they were releasing even more open data into the wild.
