Video and audio discussions now on-line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Video and audio material from the Open Publishing seminar, the first in Otago&#8217;s 2012 Open Minds series held in February, is <a href=\"http:\/\/unitube.otago.ac.nz\/album?a=sDhR2t4tsZf\">now on-line<\/a>, ahead of our second session on Open Educational Resources on 28 June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re gonna be payin\u2019 double for a while,\u201d suggested one participant in our first Open Minds seminar, which focused on open publishing. After listening to presentations from Natalia Timiraos\u00a0of open access publisher BioMed Central (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/unitube.otago.ac.nz\/view?m=ZWgR2tbEuIQ\">Open Access Publishing \u2013 how it works, how it evolves<\/a><\/em>) and from Jane Hornibrook, Public Lead of Creative Commons Aotearoa NZ \u00a0(<em><a href=\"http:\/\/unitube.otago.ac.nz\/view?m=Pabj2tcw2hS\">Creative Commons licensing in open scholarship<\/a><\/em>), participants grappled with the issue of who pays for open access to publications, especially with the current co-existence of traditional and open access publishing models.<\/p>\n<p>Some bemoaned the fact that many open access models simply transfer cost from commercial publisher to author \u2013 meaning the public would still pay for access, just through a different system (though a new model has since been announced, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/openotago\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=159&amp;action=edit\">as blogged below<\/a>). Others considered the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitube.otago.ac.nz\/view?m=lnvp2SqWJMv\">role that the library has to play<\/a>, given that it currently pays for access to e-resources. Ultimately the general consensus was that we are in a transitional phase and we can\u2019t see exactly what we\u2019ll end up with. One participant argued that the transition would transform the research culture of universities because the internet is forcing us to re-think \u201cthe very fundamental question of what we are here to do\u2026how can we now reach this objective in a more efficient, cost-effective, sustainable manner using these new technologies that we didn\u2019t have before\u201d (listen to the whole conversation <a href=\"http:\/\/unitube.otago.ac.nz\/view?m=QeNI2SaQbuf\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>All the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitube.otago.ac.nz\/album?a=sDhR2t4tsZf\">content<\/a> is licenced <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\">CC BY-SA<\/a>.
