How many of them buy a copy? Perhaps the library can\u2019t get a licence to an ebook version? Are you worried about inequities amongst your students having access whenever and whenever they need it?<\/p>\n<p>Open textbooks may provide a solution, where the whole resource is free and online for a whole class to access without logins or restrictions on downloads or printing. There are many high-quality ones already available \u2013 licensed for reuse and adaptation \u2013 whether you want something that covers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uq.pressbooks.pub\/academicwritingskills\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">academic writing skills<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openstax.org\/details\/books\/anatomy-and-physiology-2e\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anatomy and physiology<\/a>\u00a0or something more specific like this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\/textbooks\/research-methods-in-psychology-new-zealand-edition\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychology text adapted for use in New Zealand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/mediastudies101\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open text developed locally<\/a> has since 2015 been viewed over 500,000 times by more than 200,000 people across the world. How is that for real-world impact and visibility? &#8212; good for PBRF and your profile!<\/p>\n<p>Reasons to consider incorporating OERs into your teaching practice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>affordability\u00a0\u2013<\/strong>\u00a0every student begins the semester with free access to the same learning materials<\/li>\n<li><strong>access and accessibility\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>students have\u00a0permanent free access to resources in multiple formats (for an example, select \u2018Download this book\u2019 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usq.pressbooks.pub\/wellbeingineducationalcontexts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this resource<\/a>\u00a0to see the different formats available)<\/li>\n<li><strong>equity\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>OER\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isetl.org\/ijtlhe\/pdf\/IJTLHE3386.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can help improve grades<\/a>, particularly for students from low socio-economic and ethnically diverse backgrounds<\/li>\n<li><strong>retention\u00a0\u2013<\/strong>\u00a0students using open textbooks\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12528-015-9101-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are more likely to complete<\/a>\u00a0than those using commercial texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>deeper learning\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>OER enable teachers to customise their curriculum,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/2373379920962416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating deeper engagement<\/a>\u00a0for students<\/li>\n<li><strong>diversity\u00a0\u2013<\/strong>\u00a0OERs can reflect diversity in student populations by including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kpu.pressbooks.pub\/businesswriting\/front-matter\/introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gender neutral language<\/a>, culturally diverse names and first nations representation and recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Open Textbook project 2022-23<\/h3>\n<p>The project is an initiative of the Consortium of Australian University Librarians (CAUL), with about 30 universities taking part in Australia and New Zealand.
