It&#8217;s free and open-access!<\/p>\n<div id=\"abs0015\" class=\"abstract author-highlights\" lang=\"en\">\n<h2 class=\"section-title u-h3 u-margin-l-top u-margin-xs-bottom\">Highlights<\/h2>\n<div id=\"abssec0015\">\n<ul>\n<li id=\"p0015\">Menstrual app users appreciate predictions of ovulation.<\/li>\n<li>App users are unsure how predictions are made and are concerned about accuracy.<\/li>\n<li id=\"p0025\">Some app users rely on app predictions to avoid pregnancy.<\/li>\n<li>App users need accurate information about menstrual cycles and variability.<\/li>\n<li id=\"p0030\">App predictions must be evaluated and explained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/14614448211040245\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #008080\">Periods as Powerful Data: User Understandings of Menstrual App Data and Information<\/span><\/a> is published in the journal <em>New Media and Society<\/em>. These results were also presented at the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\" href=\"https:\/\/datajusticelab.org\/data-justice-2021\/\">Data Justice 2021<\/a> <\/span>conference.<\/p>\n<p>Our interviews with twenty-five menstrual app users across Aotearoa New Zealand found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some participants only track their period, while others track additional symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Participants appreciated having a choice of data to track, and they entered quite a lot of data into their apps.<\/li>\n<li>Most participants had not given much thought to their data, viewing it as uninteresting and unproblematic.<\/li>\n<li>A small group were concerned by the data risks and managed this in several ways.<\/li>\n<li>Most participants supported using data for menstrual health research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our research demonstrates a need for digital literacy.
