{"id":84,"date":"2020-11-16T18:20:41","date_gmt":"2020-11-16T05:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/?p=84"},"modified":"2020-11-16T18:20:41","modified_gmt":"2020-11-16T05:20:41","slug":"gordon-group-news-august-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/gordon-group-news-august-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Gordon Group News (August 2020)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Joe Mapley\u2019s<\/strong> paper on \u201cInvestigation of Ferrocene Linkers in \u03b2-substituted Porphyrins\u201d was published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry A.<strong> K\u0101rlis B\u0113rzi\u0146\u0161 <\/strong>and<strong> Sara Miller <\/strong>published a paper on \u201cCo-Amorphization of Kanamycin with Amino Acids Improves Aerosolization\u201d in collaboration with researchers from the School of Pharmacy, University of Otago. <strong>Sara Miller <\/strong>and<strong> Sam <\/strong><strong>McIntyre<\/strong> published Sam\u2019s summer studentship work with the KCG group in a paper, \u201cVibrational spectroscopy and chemometrics for quantifying key bioactive components of various plum cultivars grown in New Zealand\u201d, in the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joshua Sutton<\/strong> successfully defended his PhD \u201cDonor-Acceptor systems: A study using vibrational and electronic spectroscopies and computational modelling\u201d in the middle of July and is working on finishing a few papers. <strong>Elliot Tay<\/strong> submitted his Masters thesis \u201cInvestigating the Vibrational and Electronic States of Various \u03c0-Conjugated Systems\u201d and will be furthering his education by undertaking a PhD in Bochum, Germany.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a>Carla Meledandri (examiner), Joshua Sutton, Keith Gordon (supervisor), and Lyall Hanton (convenor) after Joshua\u2019s PhD defence.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, KCG group members have been busy presenting and participating in different virtual conferences and workshops. <strong>Chima Robert<\/strong> and <strong>K\u0101rlis B\u0113rzi\u0146\u0161<\/strong> gave talks, titled\u00a0&#8220;Understanding the isothermal dehydration of crystalline hydrates in both the low and mid-frequency Raman regions&#8221;\u00a0and \u201cSolving the computational puzzle: towards a pragmatic pathway for modelling low-energy vibrational modes of pharmaceutical crystals\u201c, respectively, at the annual Pharmaceutical Solid State Research Cluster (PSSRC) Zoom meeting at the end of the June. Chima\u2019s presentation was nominated as one of the 12 best presentations at the meeting. Chima\u2019s work highlighted the polymorphic transformation of some common drugs upon dehydration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-86\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1065\" height=\"894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/2.png 1065w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/2-300x252.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/2-768x645.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/2-1024x860.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/keithgordon\/files\/2020\/11\/2-357x300.png 357w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1065px) 100vw, 1065px\" \/><\/a>Chima and the Graphical abstract of his talk<\/p>\n<p>The majority of KCG group participated in the International sChool On Nonlinear vibrational Spectro-microscopy (ICONS2020) virtual school, which was organized along the International Conference of Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS2021). That was a nice science exposure on non-linear vibrational spectroscopy and its novel applications, which was conducted by experts in that field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sara Miller <\/strong>was nominated as one of 100 Full STE(a)M ahead Women in South, New Zealand, organised by Otago museum<strong>. Fatema Ahmmed,<\/strong> <strong>Jacob Harrison, Jeremy Rooney,<\/strong> and <strong>Samanali Garagoda Arachchige<\/strong> are working on their respective studies. <strong>Samantha Jarvis<\/strong> and <strong>Peter Remoto <\/strong>joined with KCG group as CHEM390 students, completing projects into organic and inorganic donor acceptor systems, respectively, over the semester break.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Mapley\u2019s paper on \u201cInvestigation of Ferrocene Linkers in \u03b2-substituted Porphyrins\u201d was published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry A.
