{"id":914,"date":"2019-02-12T14:36:16","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T02:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/?p=914"},"modified":"2019-02-22T14:20:30","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T02:20:30","slug":"how-will-i-learn-at-otago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/how-will-i-learn-at-otago\/","title":{"rendered":"How will I learn at Otago?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>If you are a new student to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Otago <\/a>you will no doubt have a lot of questions&#8230;&#8230;..and sometimes asking questions is challenging&#8230;..so, we are going to try to explain a few things here on our blog, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/first-year-students\/study\/otago668306.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how do you learn at Otago<\/a>?\u00a0 It might seem like a silly question, but trust us, no question is ever silly, and we have received a multitude of feedback from international students that suggests our teaching and learning style is different to other parts of the world.\u00a0 So, how will you learn here?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Lecturer_giving_lecture.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-917\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Lecturer_giving_lecture-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Lecturer_giving_lecture-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Lecturer_giving_lecture-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Lecturer_giving_lecture-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Lecturer_giving_lecture-451x300.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Lecture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will be your main source of information and knowledge for the majority of your studies.\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/humanresources\/training\/academic-staff\/academic-titles\/otago069304.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lecturer<\/a>, or a group of lecturers are assigned to teach each of the papers you are enrolled in.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/lecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lectures<\/a> are held in specially designed rooms and last for 50 minutes &#8211; and the information is presented to you (as pictured) with verbal commentary following\u00a0\u00a0 power point slides, printed material may be handed to you in class, including selected readings.\u00a0 Sometimes it may be tempting to miss a lecture, or two&#8230;&#8230;(it is a beautiful sunny day and you&#8217;d rather be at the beach) but we urge you to not make this a habit &#8211; it&#8217;s a chance for more opportunity to really interact with staff and your fellow students.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/first-year-students\/study\/otago669682.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tutorials<\/a>, as opposed to lectures which can comprise of hundreds of students, are kept down to a smaller scale of approximately 10 students to one staff member.\u00a0 This gives you the chance to get one-on-one assistance, and the tutorial is also used as a way to help figure out the best way to go about an assignment, or to put you into teams to work on your skills working with others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Students_in_library.writing-notes-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-924\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Students_in_library.writing-notes-jpg-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Students_in_library.writing-notes-jpg-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Students_in_library.writing-notes-jpg-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Students_in_library.writing-notes-jpg-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/02\/Students_in_library.writing-notes-jpg-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Self directed study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another fact you may not know about studying at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Otago<\/a> is that our academics believe you need to be self motivated in order to succeed.\u00a0 They can encourage, inspire and help, but ultimately you have to do the work.\u00a0 Making sure that you plan time to do the readings and to get onto the assignments ahead of the due date.\u00a0 Our tip?\u00a0 Buy a wall calendar\/planner to outline all of your lectures\/tutorials\/labs and assignment deadline dates, it will really make life easier.\u00a0 It might sound a little dull, and something your parents might say, but we really do want these university years to be some of the best years of your life, so taking a little time to map things out will definitely help.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/otago.custhelp.com\/app\/international_enquiries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-90\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Enquire-now-button-e1542234542869.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"45\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Nicky Richardson is an International Marketing Coordinator at the University of Otago.
