the academic staff.\u00a0 We have an exceptionally talented and hard working body of academics that are passionate about their research, education and encouraging students to ask questions, think for themselves and ultimately, hopefully contribute to making the world a better place.\u00a0 As part of our blog series, we are regularly going to sit down with one of our academics and ask 5 questions, so today we&#8217;re catching up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/law\/staff\/otago669410.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Anna High<\/a>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/law\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Law Faculty<\/a>, Anna currently teaches Evidence Law and Criminal Law.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_787\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-787\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dr-Anna-High.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-787 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dr-Anna-High-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dr-Anna-High-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dr-Anna-High.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Anna High, who teaches at the University of Otago Faculty of Law.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Research Expertise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is your area of research expertise, and what is it about your particular area that motivates you?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have a number of research interests, but my current focus is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Chinese-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese Law<\/a>.\u00a0 My DPhil (equivalent to our PhD) focused on the negotiated existence of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadevelopmentbrief.cn\/articles\/non-legal-orphanages-and-the-chinese-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unregistered orphanages and child welfare NGO&#8217;s<\/a> (Non-Governmental Organisations) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/China\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a>, and their interactions, as quasi-legal organisations with state actors.\u00a0 I&#8217;m in the final stages of preparing a book on this topic, based on my DPhil fieldwork and updated data gathered in 2017.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/buildings-business-commerce-927485.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-796\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/buildings-business-commerce-927485-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/buildings-business-commerce-927485-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/buildings-business-commerce-927485-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/buildings-business-commerce-927485-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/buildings-business-commerce-927485-449x300.jpg 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you find your passion?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I studied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelchinaguide.com\/essential\/language.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mandarin<\/a> from primary school right through to University in Australia.\u00a0 Being a Chinese speaker opened a lot of doors when I was at university, including great clerkship opportunities in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discoverhongkong.com\/nz\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hong Kong<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinahighlights.com\/shanghai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shanghai<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelchinaguide.com\/cityguides\/beijing.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beijing<\/a>.\u00a0 By the time I was choosing my DPhil topic, I knew I wanted to study the nature and role of law in Chinese culture.\u00a0 The topic I chose to focus on &#8211; Chinese child welfare law &#8211; also intersects with my interest in how the law protects vulnerable populations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dunedin_campus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-798\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dunedin_campus-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dunedin_campus-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dunedin_campus-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dunedin_campus-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Dunedin_campus-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you end up in Dunedin?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m originally from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelvictoria.com.au\/horsham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horsham, Victoria<\/a>, and attended university at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Queensland.<\/a> My journey to Dunedin has taken me almost right around the globe \u2013 from UQ to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Oxford<\/a>, to complete the BCL, MPhil and DPhil in law as the Queensland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/Rhodes%20scholar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhodes Scholar<\/a> \u201908; to the US, where I first taught at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marquette.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marquette University<\/a> Law School, and then at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loyola University Chicago<\/a> School of Law; then finally to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunedinnz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dunedin<\/a>.
