{"id":675,"date":"2019-01-14T14:30:22","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T02:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/?p=675"},"modified":"2019-01-14T15:11:49","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T03:11:49","slug":"5-steps-to-becoming-more-mentally-fit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/5-steps-to-becoming-more-mentally-fit\/","title":{"rendered":"5 steps to becoming more mentally fit&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em> What is mental health and fitness?\u00a0 Is it like physical fitness in that you can gain it or lose it?\u00a0 What knowledge and support is there when people need to get help?\u00a0 Or how can people retain their resilience and keep well when life throws its various curveballs?\u00a0 This is an enormous topic, but we are going to keep it simple.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div><em><a href=\"https:\/\/b.3cdn.net\/nefoundation\/8984c5089d5c2285ee_t4m6bhqq5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> shows there are five simple things you can do as part of your daily<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>life \u2013 at work and at home \u2013 to build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/intl\/basics\/resilience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resilience<\/a>, boost your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/view-the-mist\/201807\/the-elusive-quest-well-being\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wellbeing<\/a> and lower<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>your risk of developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.govt.nz\/your-health\/conditions-and-treatments\/mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental illness<\/a>. These simple actions are known<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>internationally as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.nz\/assets\/5-ways-toolkit\/Five-Ways-to-Wellbeing-at-Work-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Five Ways to Wellbeing<\/a> and are actively being promoted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand &#8211; mauri t\u016b mauri ora<\/a>.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_on_treadmills.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-700\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_on_treadmills-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_on_treadmills-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_on_treadmills-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_on_treadmills-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_on_treadmills-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>Are mental and physical fitness the same? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Without getting overly complicated or indepth the answer is yes.\u00a0 You can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/depression\/mental-fitness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentally fit<\/a>, or un-fit, just as you can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.govt.nz\/your-health\/healthy-living\/food-activity-and-sleep\/physical-activity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">physically fit<\/a> or un-fit and both can be gained or lost.\u00a0 Depending on a variety of factors, you may be more susceptible to suffering from illness due to mental health than another person.\u00a0 We are all different, and unique and I think it is really important to remember this.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-science-self-help\/201208\/one-size-does-not-fit-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Not one size fits all<\/a>.\u00a0 Understanding your own version of &#8216;normal&#8217; will help you know when things aren&#8217;t feeling right for you.\u00a0 Getting to know &#8216;you&#8217; is one of the best things that you can do to safeguard and keep yourself mentally and physically well.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.nz\/assets\/5-ways-toolkit\/Five-Ways-to-Wellbeing-at-Work-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five ways to wellbeing<\/a> as recommended by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Group_of_students.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-685\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Group_of_students-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Group_of_students-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Group_of_students-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Group_of_students-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Group_of_students-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Connect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Feeling connected to others, and feeling valued and appreciated by those around you, whether in a personal or a professional context is a very important part of mental fitness.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/thriveglobal.com\/stories\/why-humans-need-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human beings are not designed to &#8216;go it alone.&#8217;\u00a0<\/a> In saying that, I&#8217;m not suggesting you have to be an extrovert and the life and soul of the party, it just means that we all need connection with others.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/chopra.com\/articles\/10-ways-to-strengthen-your-relationships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strengthening your relationships<\/a> with your inner circle and your work\/study colleagues by talking with them and listening to them are all safe guarding your mental fitness.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baggagereclaim.co.uk\/recognising-healthy-interactions-and-relationships-theres-a-simple-way-to-do-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthy connections<\/a> with people make us feel good about ourselves and where we fit into the world, they also help others understand our own unique perspective on how we view the world and can help support us in times of need.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_in_lecture.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-691\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_in_lecture-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_in_lecture-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_in_lecture-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_in_lecture-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/01\/Students_in_lecture-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Keep learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Neale Donald Walsch famously quoted &#8220;life begins at the end of your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodblink.com\/why-life-begins-end-your-comfort-zone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comfort zone<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 And although it is lovely to feel safe and comfortable in a daily routine, it also pays to be aware of new opportunities that come across your path.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/articles\/138644-7-ways-to-be-more-open-to-new-experiences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Be open to new experiences.<\/a>\u00a0 Yes, it may very well be challenging, but that is part of what growing and developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/intl\/basics\/resilience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resilience<\/a> is all about.\u00a0 It is frightening and stressful to try new things and go outside your normal level of comfort, but once you have overcome these initial fears you may completely surprise yourself &#8211;
