A Muslim perspective on life at Otago University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>How do students that choose to live their lives in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Islam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muslim faith<\/a> feel when they come to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/future-students\/international\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Otago<\/a>?\u00a0 Do they stand out from the crowd?\u00a0 Are their beliefs and practices respected and catered for?\u00a0 Well, that is a question I cannot answer as I am not a Muslim.\u00a0 But I have met Muslim students working here and I have an increasing interest in the way that they choose to lead their lives.\u00a0 Today we launch our international video taken from the perspective of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HKCdBhagS1U&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muslim student studying at Otago<\/a> \u2013 so, what is it like?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/Foundation-Lab-Class-International-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-388 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/Foundation-Lab-Class-International-4-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/Foundation-Lab-Class-International-4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/Foundation-Lab-Class-International-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/Foundation-Lab-Class-International-4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/Foundation-Lab-Class-International-4-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>My day is just like yours<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These quotes were taken from anonymous Muslim writers in an article titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.critic.co.nz\/features\/article\/6179\/what-is-it-like-being-a-muslim-student-at-otago-un\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;What is it like to be a Muslim Student at Otago University&#8217;<\/a> and published by Critic in August 2016:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a Muslim student at Otago, my day is just like yours. This is because<em> not all Muslims come in the same packaging.<\/em> There are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2017\/01\/31\/worlds-muslim-population-more-widespread-than-you-might-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over a billion of us worldwide<\/a> and each is an individual. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Islam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Islam<\/a> is the religion I was born into and have grown up with. For me, it is not something I consciously think about but the <em>values that come with being Muslim are now so deeply ingrained within my identity that they are second nature<\/em>. It is something I carry with me in my interaction with other students, with the University itself and the general public.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Isabella-Harrex-Graduation-2017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-170\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Isabella-Harrex-Graduation-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Isabella-Harrex-Graduation-2017.jpg 900w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Isabella-Harrex-Graduation-2017-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Isabella-Harrex-Graduation-2017-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Isabella-Harrex-Graduation-2017-444x300.jpg 444w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diverse staff and students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think that the point made that &#8220;<em>not all Muslims come in the same packaging<\/em>&#8221; is something we non-Muslims need to remember.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t judge a book by its cover, and especially don&#8217;t judge a way of life that you have no understanding of.\u00a0 Reading through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.critic.co.nz\/features\/article\/6179\/what-is-it-like-being-a-muslim-student-at-otago-un\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">articles<\/a> written and the conversations had, it is clear that Muslim students predominantly feel welcomed and accepted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If anything, I\u2019m overwhelmed with how accepting and open-minded all of the staff and students are here. One of the first things that I noticed when I moved here was how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/administration\/policies\/otago666398.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>diverse<\/em><\/a><em> the student body appeared to be and how nobody seemed to care about what anyone else was doing. This is one of my favourite things about this place.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/arabic-belief-black-and-white-1487953.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-397\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/arabic-belief-black-and-white-1487953-1024x656.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/arabic-belief-black-and-white-1487953-1024x656.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/arabic-belief-black-and-white-1487953-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/arabic-belief-black-and-white-1487953-768x492.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/12\/arabic-belief-black-and-white-1487953-468x300.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>No barriers to practising beliefs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University has two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.critic.co.nz\/news\/article\/4953\/prayer-rooms-open---hallelujah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prayer rooms<\/a> <span class=\"s1\">with one space exclusively for the Islamic community; it faces Mecca and is split into two rooms by a curtain.
