{"id":250,"date":"2018-11-26T11:56:18","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T23:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/?p=250"},"modified":"2018-11-29T09:20:23","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T21:20:23","slug":"where-are-they-now-5-questions-and-answers-with-an-otago-alumni","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/where-are-they-now-5-questions-and-answers-with-an-otago-alumni\/","title":{"rendered":"Where are they now?  5 questions and answers with an Otago alumni."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>There is no shortage of information on what universities can offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/future-students\/international\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prospective international students<\/a> in regards to programme choice, entrance requirements, accommodation and lifestyle, but once you have reached your goal and walked the stage to receive your hard earned degree or diploma, what next?\u00a0 Life doesn&#8217;t end when your course ends, it is just the beginning!\u00a0 We decided to catch up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/alumni\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Otago alumni<\/a> Joyce Zhang to find out where she is, what she is doing, and her thoughts on what it is like to be an international student studying at Otago.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-253\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Joyce-Clock-Tower-2018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-253 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Joyce-Clock-Tower-2018-730x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Joyce-Clock-Tower-2018-730x1024.jpg 730w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Joyce-Clock-Tower-2018-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Joyce-Clock-Tower-2018-768x1078.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">University of Otago alumni Joyce Zhang pictured outside our famous clocktower.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What did you study and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I studied English at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/uolcfy\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Otago Language Centre and Foundation Year<\/a> UOLCFY and then studied telecommunication (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/courses\/qualifications\/pgdipsci.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Postgraduate Diploma in Science<\/a>) in information science department which is on the ninth, tenth and eleventh floors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/business\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Otago Business School<\/a> building. It was the same major as my Bachelor degree, everyone in my bachelor class in China pursued a higher degree as we believe it will lead to better employability. I thought \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/postgraduate\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">why not improve my English along with a higher qualification<\/a>\u2019 so I decided to go overseas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are you now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am working as a China Representative for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Otago<\/a> and I am based in Guangzhou, China. A Japanese girl I met in Language Centre helped me a lot to improve my oral English so I achieved IELTS 7 in speaking after only 1 month of my arrival in NZ. A Korean girl with a working holiday visa invited me to visit her in <a href=\"http:\/\/english.visitseoul.net\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seoul<\/a> two years ago, and we went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shanghaidisneyresort.com\/en\/destinations\/theme-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shanghai Disneyland<\/a> this March. I also met a nice couple from <a href=\"https:\/\/denmark.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denmark<\/a> who studied as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/study\/studentexchange\/partners\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exchange students<\/a> and we visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dunedinchinesegarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dunedin Chinese Garden<\/a> and went skiing together. You might worry about your English, safety about travelling and all sorts of stuff, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">please don&#8217;t stop exploring<\/a>. Join in peer programmes, language exchange programmes, mentee and mentor programmes.\u00a0 There are many kinds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/studentservices\/otherservices\/otago030408.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">useful programmes<\/a> designed for international students that will give you real engagement and help you become a true Otago student.<\/p>\n<p>And just because we like to keep things a little bit light hearted, we thought we would throw in a random question&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you were on a deserted island and could only bring three things, what would you bring and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hmmm water, food and\u2026 a boyfriend??!! \u00a0 Even if I was isolated, I can still be alive and enjoy every min as long as I can! &#x1f60a;<\/p>\n<p>If you want to maximise your employment opportunities with further study, want to improve your English speaking and make life long friendships, be like Joyce and find out more about studying at Otago!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/otago.custhelp.com\/app\/international_enquiries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-90\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Enquire-now-button-e1542234542869.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"45\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Nicky Richardson is an International Marketing Coordinator at the University of Otago.
