{"id":1030,"date":"2019-03-01T14:34:27","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T02:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/?p=1030"},"modified":"2019-04-04T13:45:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T01:45:39","slug":"top-7-eateries-around-otago-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/top-7-eateries-around-otago-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 7 eateries around Otago University!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Food, glorious food&#8230;..it is something we all need and hopefully enjoy, and no longer is today&#8217;s consumer happy with something that is bland, boring and and tasteless&#8230;&#8230;today&#8217;s consumer demands fresh, innovative food and really good coffee&#8230;&#8230;so what is available to you within 5 minutes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Otago<\/a> campus?\u00a0 I went for a bit of a stroll today to let you see the food outlets that we think are worth a mention.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301102226.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1036\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301102226-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301102226-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301102226-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301102226-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301102226-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Te M\u0101titi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Te M\u0101titi is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> University of Otago&#8217;s<\/a> new kid on the block.\u00a0 It is located in the newly refurbished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/business\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Otago Business School<\/a>, and offers a range of food and coffee prepared by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/university-union\/outlets\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University Union<\/a>, our in house catering and food suppliers.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty awesome space within the large open plan ground floor of the business school and large glass windows that look out to the Leith river below make it feel light and airy &#8211; plus, they&#8217;re a friendly bunch that work here.\u00a0 The University of Otago operations manager was recently awarded\u00a0 a special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/news\/dunedin\/praise-serving-te-reo-coffees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He Toki award for introducing bilingual signage<\/a> so that you can order your coffee in te reo &#8211; from a mowai (flat white) to a ratei tiai (chai latte) at Te M\u0101titi and seven of the nine cafes on campus!\u00a0 Ka pai!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301104214.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1041\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301104214-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301104214-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301104214-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301104214-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301104214-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sushi Station<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Slightly reluctantly the lovely owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sushistationdunedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sushi Station<\/a> agreed to let me take his picture&#8230;&#8230;he is always on hand with a smile and to open the door for you, and ensures that there is a steady stream of food coming from the busy kitchen.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sushistationdunedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sushi Station<\/a> is located on Albany Street, directly opposite our central library and popular choices to takeaway include rice balls, bento boxes, dumplings and pok\u0113 bowls.\u00a0 But if you&#8217;re wanting something a little more substantial, they have a hot menu that, not that we are into naming names, is very popular with <a href=\"http:\/\/thehighlanders.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Highlanders Rugby Team<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/otagocricket.co.nz\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volts<\/a> (our cricket team) players and management and you will often see them dining in at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sushistationdunedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sushi Station<\/a>.\u00a0 The decor is cute, with little flower boxes in the window and the queue often extends out onto the footpath, a clear sign this little business is a winner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Formosa-Delight-Beatrice-Lin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1051\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Formosa-Delight-Beatrice-Lin-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Formosa-Delight-Beatrice-Lin-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Formosa-Delight-Beatrice-Lin-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Formosa-Delight-Beatrice-Lin-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Formosa-Delight-Beatrice-Lin-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Formosa-Delight-Beatrice-Lin.jpg 1035w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Formosa Delight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like quite a few things in our little city, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Formosa-Delight-Cafe-272246866143422\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Formosa Delight<\/a> is a very humble looking little cafe from the outside &#8211; but do not let this appearance deceive you.\u00a0 Staff and students alike flock to this little cafe in Albany Street that serves up predominantly vegan or vegetarian <a href=\"https:\/\/matadornetwork.com\/read\/23-taiwanese-foods-rest-world-know-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taiwanese food.<\/a>\u00a0 The herbs, salad greens, kale and garlic chives are grown by owner Beatrice Lin (pictured here) in her large organic garden, the eggs are from her free range hens, plus all the food served by Beatrice and her husband is made from scratch.\u00a0 I have had the pleasure of dining here and I can definitely recommend paying this quiet little eatery a visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Fluid-Smoothie-Shot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1052\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Fluid-Smoothie-Shot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Fluid-Smoothie-Shot.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Fluid-Smoothie-Shot-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Fluid-Smoothie-Shot-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/Fluid-Smoothie-Shot-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fluid Espresso<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is another favourite for staff and students, just a block from campus and you&#8217;ll find this little stunner.\u00a0 Again, another passionate group of people at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Fluid-Espresso-152888782396\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fluid Espresso<\/a> making the food predominantly from scratch with super fresh ingredients.\u00a0 INCREDIBLE cabinet selection of beautiful sweet treats, but also a really good range of fresh salads, wraps and bagels.\u00a0 Pictured here are their smoothies, and if you&#8217;re a coffee drinker apparently these guys know how to make a good brew.\u00a0 They also stock a few small gift items and the space is beautifully decorated and accessorised without being intimidating.\u00a0 Again, awesome and friendly service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301103256.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1038\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301103256-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301103256-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301103256-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301103256-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301103256-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dispensary Cafe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of Dunedin&#8217;s little hidden gems, this tiny cafe could easily be missed if you didn&#8217;t know it was there, but the locals know all about it and you&#8217;ll see a busy line of people buzzing in and out throughout the day.\u00a0 Again located on Albany Street, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidersdunedin.co.nz\/culinary-insider\/2014\/7\/17\/the-dispensary-caters-to-a-new-breed-of-scarfie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dispensary Cafe<\/a> is fresh, great scones (apparently you have to get in early) and slices, light and airy and by all reports provides great coffee&#8230;&#8230;I am not a coffee drinker so I can only go on the feedback of others &#8211; my colleagues in the office next door are hooked on the stuff, so if they go there, it must be good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301105026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1044\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301105026-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301105026-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301105026-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301105026-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG20190301105026-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food Trucks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/business\/local-business\/upmarket-food-truck-fare-hits-spot-dunedin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food trucks in Dunedin<\/a> both on campus and dotted around the city, including these guys &#8216;Jian bing&#8217; who serve a Chinese savoury crepe, they&#8217;re neighbours to &#8216;Rising Sun Dumplings&#8217; whose $6 for five pork or vegetarian dumplings and fried rice have fuelled many a student during their time at Otago.\u00a0 Plus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/husseyandlaredo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hussey &amp; Laredo<\/a> are currently around the corner in their sunny yellow caravan and serve up coffee, and locally sourced produce to make their gorgeous haloumi bagels amongst other things.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizens.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizens Food Truck<\/a> regularly parks up on the museum reserve serving bao buns and loaded fries &#8211;
