Photos: Ako Aotearoa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From a little girl growing up in a small island in Samoa, to winning the Prime Minister\u2019s Supreme Award at the National Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards, Faumuina has certainly come a long way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to New Zealand in the 1980\u2019s \u2013 fresh off the boat \u2013 to train in Medicine at the University of Otago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faumuina also received an Endorsement for Excellence in Supporting Pacific Learners, a reflection of her ongoing commitment to pastoral care and curriculum development of Pacific students.\u00a0 She is \u201cdelighted\u201d that Pacific Health is being recognised as important in the training of future health professionals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Pacific-Graduation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-106 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Pacific-Graduation-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Pacific-Graduation-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Pacific-Graduation-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Pacific-Graduation-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Pacific-Graduation-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cAs an international student, coming from a small island in the Pacific (Samoa), the University could have been overwhelming.\u00a0 I thrived in the environment, met wonderful friends from many areas in the world including Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas and of course Kiwis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faumuina&#8217;s experience studying at Otago saw her face some major personal challenges, but \u201d through the excellent and supportive environment, I graduated despite developing a chronic illness (Lupus) while in training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faumuina chooses to call Dunedin and NZ home now \u2013 \u201cDunedin is truly an international university city, its people are proud of this, and embrace all students from different ethnic backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it is her experience studying and now teaching at the University that Faumuina and her husband (a first generation Canadian with Italian parents), choose to stay here\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Otago\u2019s motto is \u2018Dare to be Wise\u2019 \u2013 students are offered every opportunity to excel here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Discover more about how Otago and New Zealand teachers could change your future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New Zealand Teachers Lead the World #FutureProofYourself\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2kcO0eirygo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/otago.custhelp.com\/app\/international_enquiries\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-90 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/international\/files\/2018\/11\/Enquire-now-button.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Nicky Richardson is an International Marketing Coordinator at the University of Otago.
