‘Global Dunedin’ is an initiative of the University of Otago’s Centre for Research on Colonial Culture. It is designed to serve as a forum for discussing our city’s historical development and its changing economy, social life, and cultural pattern. We are interested in how the city has changed over time and the ways in which its pasts have shaped its current and future prospects. This blog – together with our associated Facebook page and twitter account – will disseminate reflections on the city’s history and life here now. We are also running a public lecture series in conjunction with Toitū Otago Settlers Museum: in these Sunday afternoon talks, leading local researchers and thinkers will reflect on different aspects of Dunedin’s past and present. Follow us and join in the conversations!
The team of researchers behind the Global Dunedin project comprises Professor Tony Ballantyne, Professor Angela McCarthy, Dr Angela Wanhalla, Dr Jane McCabe, and Violeta Gilabert.

Thank you very much Violeta, I knew we had portraits of my Great great grandparents James and Mary Ferguson at Toitu. But I had no idea Mary’s parents had accompanied them or that there were these pictures of them. I am very grateful for your work – and that it is on-line for me to find.
Kind regards/ nga mihi
