Bassi: An Eighteenth-Century Newtonian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kirsten Walsh writes&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laura_Bassi\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Bassi (1711-1778)<\/a> had a remarkable career.\u00a0 In eighteenth-century Italy, it was rare, but not unheard of, for a woman from a wealthy family to receive a higher education, a doctorate, or even a lectureship.\u00a0 But what made Bassi <em>unique<\/em> was how she used her positions at the University of Bologna and the Academy of Science (which would ordinarily have been symbolic) to contribute to the scientific community of Europe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/2009\/06\/11\/hello-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thony Christie<\/a> over at <a href=\"http:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Renaissance Mathematicus<\/a> recently wrote a very good <a href=\"http:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/16\/another-feminist-newtonian\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> about Bassi\u2019s life and career, so I will not go into those details here.\u00a0 Instead, today I\u2019m interested in Bassi as an eighteenth-century Newtonian and experimental physicist.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/e\/e9\/Laura_Bassi_-_Carlo_Vandi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"363\" \/>Over the course of her career (roughly 1732 to 1778), Bassi presented papers on mathematics, pneumatics, fluid dynamics, mechanics, optics and electricity.\u00a0 Most of these papers have been lost, but the few surviving papers display Bassi\u2019s talent for mathematics and her commitment to the Newtonian method (as exemplified by <em>Principia<\/em>).\u00a0 For example, in her paper on differential calculus (<em>\u201cDe problemate quodam mechanico\u201d, <\/em>1757), Bassi dealt with the problem of how to determine the motion of the centre of mass of two or more bodies moving along any curved paths in a plane.\u00a0 In this paper, she followed the Newtonian method of avoiding metaphysical and empirical assumptions about the nature of matter.<\/p>\n<p>From the 1740s onwards, Bassi and her husband\u00a0 Giuseppe Veratti became very interested in electrical phenomena.\u00a0 Here, we can identify two different Newtonian themes. \u00a0Firstly, their research appears to have been heavily influenced by the later queries of the <em>Opticks<\/em>, which attempt to link phenomena such as light, heat, electricity and magnetism with biological phenomena such as muscle movement, growth of plants and phosphorescent fish.\u00a0 Secondly, they supported <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benjamin_Franklin#Electricity\" target=\"_blank\">Franklin\u2019s<\/a> electrical-fluid theory, which had been systematised in a Newtonian framework by Beccaria.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1740s, Bassi began teaching privately.\u00a0 Bassi and Veratti had a well-equipped physics laboratory in their home, including an electricity machine.\u00a0 This made it possible for Bassi to teach experimental physics in their home.\u00a0 At the University, the philosophical curriculum was essentially scholastic, and at the Institute of Sciences, the courses on experimental physics had a physiological focus (which reflected the interests of the Bolognese scholars, most of whom had medical degrees).\u00a0 Bassi\u2019s knowledge-base, which by then included advanced mathematics, mechanics, optics, and electricity, made her uniquely qualified to teach a course on Newtonian philosophy and Franklinian electricity.\u00a0 In a letter to Scarselli in 1755 she mentioned the popularity of her classes: \u201cThe classes have gathered such momentum that they are now attended by people of considerable education, including foreigners, rather than by youths\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>From this brief survey of Bassi\u2019s work, she appears to have adopted many facets of Newtonianism: she accepted and built on Newton\u2019s rational mechanics, but also followed the leads left by Newton in his optical queries. \u00a0Indeed, in her own time, Bassi was a well-known Newtonian.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francesco_Algarotti\" target=\"_blank\">Algarotti<\/a> mentioned her several times (although not by name) in his <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.co.nz\/books\/about\/Sir_Isaac_Newton_s_philosophy_explain_d.html?id=qG1bAAAAQAAJ&amp;redir_esc=y\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Sir Isaac Newton\u2019s Philosophy explain\u2019d for the use of the Ladies<\/em><\/a> and explicitly presented her as a Newtonian in \u2018<em>Non la lesboa\u2019<\/em> \u2013 his contribution to the book of poems published in honour of Bassi\u2019s graduation. \u00a0Also, in 1744 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voltaire\" target=\"_blank\">Voltaire<\/a> implicitly compared Bassi with Newton when he wrote:<\/p>\n<ol>Most Honoured Lady: I would like to visit Bologna so that I might say to my fellow citizens that I have seen Signora Bassi, but, deprived of this honour, I trust that I may with justice cast at your feet this philosophical homage in reverence to the glory of her century and sex.\u00a0 As there is no Bassi in London I should more happily enter your Academy of Bologna than the English one, even though it may have produced a Newton.<\/ol>\n<p>But what can we say about Bassi\u2019s \u2018experimental physics\u2019?\u00a0 The subject-matter was certainly Newtonian, but what about the methodology?\u00a0 On this blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/2011\/05\/experimental-philosophy-empiricism-20-theses\/\" target=\"_blank\">we have argued<\/a> that, from the 1690s onwards, the experimental philosophy was approached in a way that emulated Newton\u2019s mathematical-experimental method.\u00a0 Bassi certainly had the expertise to follow the Newtonian method, which raises the question: Should Bassi\u2019s experimental physics be seen as another facet of her Newtonianism, or should we regard it as a more general interest in the experimental method?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I haven\u2019t been able to find the evidence to answer this question.\u00a0 I\u2019m not even sure if Bassi engaged in any kind of methodological reflection.\u00a0 Does anyone know how I might find
