{"id":2371,"date":"2012-05-25T09:59:28","date_gmt":"2012-05-24T21:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/?p=2371"},"modified":"2012-05-26T03:45:44","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T15:45:44","slug":"an-open-conversation-about-early-modern-history-and-philosophy-of-science-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/an-open-conversation-about-early-modern-history-and-philosophy-of-science-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"An Open Conversation about Early Modern History and Philosophy of Science in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Peter Anstey writes &#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a <strong>new venture<\/strong> for this blog we are hosting a conversation about the discipline of History and Philosophy of Science.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>aim<\/strong> of this exchange of ideas is to review the discipline and to come up with ideas and strategies that will reinvigorate it within Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The more <strong>specific aim<\/strong> is to formulate a two-hour session on Early Modern HPS at the forthcoming <em>What is this thing called History and Philosophy of Science? <\/em>to be held at the University of Sydney on 26\u201328 September 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is expected that this conversation will last for 4 months.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone is welcome to contribute.<\/p>\n<p>Contributions are by post, comment or reply.<\/p>\n<p>Please send new posts to Peter Anstey at <a href=\"mailto:peter.anstey@otago.ac.nz\">peter.anstey@otago.ac.nz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New posts will appear on Thursdays.<\/p>\n<p>Moderators of the conversation are Peter Anstey (Otago) and Alberto Vanzo (Birmingham).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leading Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>What is distinctive and important about early modern HPS in Australia and what is worth preserving and developing?<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It seems that an adequate answer this question will address some or all of the following issues:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1. Its <em>historiographical<\/em> orientation and contribution<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">2. Its <em>historical<\/em> methods and focuses<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">3. Its <em>philosophical<\/em> profile and influences<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">4.\u00a0Its research <em>methodology<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">5.\u00a0Its recent and current <em>institutional<\/em> manifestations<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">6. Let us show you how we do it!
