{"id":151,"date":"2010-09-12T07:00:33","date_gmt":"2010-09-11T19:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/?p=151"},"modified":"2012-09-25T02:04:24","modified_gmt":"2012-09-24T14:04:24","slug":"newtons-mathematical-method","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/newtons-mathematical-method\/","title":{"rendered":"Newton&#8217;s Mathematical Method"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kirsten Walsh writes&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My PhD is on Isaac Newton.\u00a0 Working within the <a title=\"Experimental Philosophy and the Origins of Empiricism\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/the-project\/\" target=\"_self\">experimental\/speculative<\/a> framework of our project, I am taking a fresh look the development of Newton\u2019s method of natural philosophy.\u00a0 I am addressing the following research questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What does Newton\u2019s method amount to?<\/li>\n<li>What were the key innovations in Newton\u2019s method of natural  philosophy?<\/li>\n<li>To what extent was Newton&#8217;s method influenced by the Baconian method of  natural history?<\/li>\n<li>Where does Newton\u2019s method fit in the experimental\/speculative framework?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I am developing a clearer account of the \u2018mathematical revolution\u2019 in natural philosophy that began with Newton.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 346px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/iweb.tntech.edu\/chem281-tf\/newton_harre_files\/image001.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"120\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newton, Opticks, 4th edition.
