{"id":1340,"date":"2011-07-28T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2011-07-27T21:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/?p=1340"},"modified":"2012-09-25T02:10:24","modified_gmt":"2012-09-24T14:10:24","slug":"experimental-philosophy-old-and-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/experimental-philosophy-old-and-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Experimental Philosophy: Old and New"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last few months, we have been working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/press\/booksauthors\/otagoauthors\/donaldkerr.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Donald Kerr<\/a>, the Special Collections Librarian at the University of Otago, to prepare a rare book exhibition on the history of experimental philosophy.\u00a0 We have brought together classic works of the past and cutting-edge books of the present, to illustrate the theme of experimental philosophy as it was understood and practised 350 years ago and as it is understood today.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl> Our exhibition, \u2018Experimental Philosophy: Old and New\u2019, was launched a few weeks ago, to coincide with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aap-conferences.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">annual conference<\/a> of the Australasian Association of Philosophy (AAP).\u00a0 It will run until 23 September 2011, so if you are coming to Dunedin, be sure to stop by and see it.<\/dl>\n<dl> <\/dl>\n<dl>\n<div id=\"attachment_1360\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/files\/2011\/07\/exhibition-poster.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1360\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1360 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/files\/2011\/07\/exhibition-poster.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The poster for our exhibition<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For those who cannot come to Dunedin, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.otago.ac.nz\/exhibitions\/experimental_philosophy\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">online version<\/a> of our exhibition.\u00a0 Notable items on display include a second edition of Isaac Newton&#8217;s <em>Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica<\/em> (1713), Francis Bacon&#8217;s <em>Of the Advancement Learning<\/em> (1640), poet Abraham Cowley&#8217;s &#8216;A Proposition for the Advancement of Experimental Philosophy&#8217; (1668), and an exciting new discovery* concerning the philosopher David Hume!<\/p>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A couple of months ago, I <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/emxphi\/2011\/05\/images-experimental-philosophy\/\" target=\"_blank\">requested your help<\/a>: we needed an image for our exhibition poster.\u00a0 We received some excellent feedback \u2013 so thank you everyone!
