June 17, 2018: Deadline to apply for Workshop: Scientific Exploration of the Arctic and North Pacific ()

Dear Colleagues,

The deadline to apply for this ocean drilling workshop is 4 days away:

Scientific Exploration of the Arctic and North Pacific (SEA-NorP)
September 25-27, 2018; Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood, Oregon, USA
http://usoceandiscovery.org/workshop-sea-norp/
At the workshop, we will develop proposals for scientific ocean drilling in the Northern Pacific, Bering Sea and Western Arctic Ocean region, including GeoPRISMS primary site, the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone. The drilling platform, JOIDES Resolution, is scheduled to operate in the Pacific in 2023. To ensure that the ship is used to best advantage, now is the time to develop proposals that could be linked through regional drilling strategies.

Our goal is to initiate multiple proposals around GeoPRISMS-related themes such as geohazards and volatile cycling, as well as other themes including ocean gateways, ice histories at transition zones, biosphere and climate.

The workshop is open to U.S. and international participants. The deadline to apply is June 17, 2018. Travel grants are available thanks to funding from USSSP-IODP, the National Science Foundation and ECORD. Graduate students, early career scientists and those new to IODP are encouraged to apply.

Draft agenda attached. For more information and to apply, visit the workshop website: http://usoceandiscovery.org/workshop-sea-norp/
Thank you,

Workshop Conveners: Lindsay Worthington (UNM), Bernard Coakley (UAF), Matthias Forwick (UiT – Tromsø), Juliane Mueller (Alfred Wegener Institute), Summer Praetorius (USGS), and Kristen St. John (JMU)

Workshop Science Committee: Jessica Larsen (UAF), Alan Mix (Oregon State), Terry Plank (LDEO), Donna Shillington (LDEO), Harold Tobin (Wisconsin)

Provide information on outcomes of past IODP work?

Hi everyone

I’ve just received an email from Stuart Henrys that indicates that there is a chance that MBIE will support long term membership fees for IODP and ICDP under the Infrastructure Component of the SSIF.

However, we have to make a good case to MBIE that these memberships are beneficial to us. We can best do that by demonstrating results/benefits/impacts of past consortia-associated research.

To help build this case, can you please take a few minutes to add information about this in the format of the attached document (which is based on Hikurangi)? In particular:

list complementary funded science proposals and funded voyages.
Student information .. year(s) institution, degree, worked on material from which IODP leg, etc
Post Doc information

Many many thanks
Virginia

Reminder – analytical funding deadline June 1 5pm

ANZIC funding for analytical work on IODP legacy material
The International Ocean Discovery Program, in its various iterations, has collected core material from all over the globe, since 1969. ANZIC encourages our research community to take advantage of this exceptional resource by conducting short research projects in support of existing research or scope out a new line of enquiry.

Funding is available to researchers working in ANZIC’s Australian member institutions. Awards of up to AU $10,000 and AU$20,000 are available. Funding is awarded for analytical work on IODP Legacy material, leading to publication.
Please read full details of this opportunity at the link below.
Applications by individuals or teams expected by Friday, June 1st (5pm), sent to Program Scientist, Leanne Armand (anzic.programscientist@anu.edu.au) and Science Committee Chair, Rob McKay (robert.mckay@vuw.ac.nz).

ANZIC Bulletin, 17 May 2018

Hi all

The latest ANZIC Bulletin is available in PDF form here

The major things it covers are:

  • Special Analytical Funding for Australian-based researchers working on IODP Legacy material has a deadline for applicitions of 31 May 2018
  • New ANZIC Governing Council list
  • Expedition 376 – Brothers Arc Flux is just starting and there is some information about it
  • Comments on the implications of the Australian federal budget for ANZIC funding
  • Australian STEM group meeting report
  • Employment opportunities
    • Communications officer
    • Some academic positions at U Melbourne
  • Announcement of an IODP workshop to consider Scientific Exploration of the Arctic and Northern Pacific, 25-27 Sept, Mt Hood, Oregon. Please follow the link in the PDF if you think you can and should attend. Note that you cannot draw on ANZIC support to do so.

NSF GeoPRISMS Program Solicitation

From the GeoPRISMS Office:

NSF has just released the new GeoPRISMS solicitation:

https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2018/nsf18559/nsf18559.htm

Full Proposal Target Date: August 13, 2018

Important revisions this year include:
– Large field projects that involve ship time, significant resources, or where the fieldwork is a significant fraction of the budget (>15%) are no longer accepted to the program;
– In order to encourage synthesis and integration of multidisciplinary datasets and models, we will welcome conference proposals throughout the year, separately from the full proposal Target Date;
– Postdoctoral proposals now only require two letters of reference
– Postdoctoral Fellows are now called Postdoctoral Scholars

Questions should be directed to PO Jennifer Wade: jwade@nsf.gov; (703) 292-4739 or Maurice Tivey: mtivey@nsf.gov; (703) 292-7710

[GeoPRISMS] Student survey for U.S. crustal-scale marine seismic imaging capabilities

Dear Peers and Colleagues,

We are organizing a student response to NSF’s decision to divest from the R/V Marcus G. Langseth by 2020. If you are a student who feels that your future research and training opportunities are impacted by this decision, we ask that you complete this brief survey by Friday, May 11:

https://goo.gl/forms/qVbKJOaKZPzBCTqh2

If you are not a student, we ask that you consider sharing our survey with students who relate to the description above. Survey participants will be provided the opportunity to sign a response letter stating student interests in academic crustal-scale seismic imaging facilities.

Regards,

Bridgit Boulahanis, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University
Andrew Gase, University of Texas at Austin, Institute for Geophysics
Hannah Mark, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts Institute for Technology
Justin Estep, Texas A&M University
Ethan Williams, California Institute of Technology

Public Lecture of likely interest

Attached is a notice for Professor Sean Gulick’s Lecture at Quad 4 Lecture Theatre, Wednesday 21 March 2018, 5pm.

Tours of the seismic vessel Marcus Langseth in Dunedin tomorrow (20 March)

Hello All,

Ewan and I will be taking our GEOL263/363 students on tours of the seismic research vessel Marcus G. Langseth on Tuesday afternoon at the T/U sheds here in Dunedin. If you are interested in joining us, there will be some spots available. Please get back to me ASAP so that I can add your name to the list that the port authorities will need.

The Langseth has just completed a seismic survey to the SW of the South Island, examining the initiation of subduction along the Puysegur Subduction Zone. Our student, Luke Carrington has been on board for the cruise and our speaker at Wednesday’s Departmental Seminar, Sean Gulick, is one of the co-chief scientists on the voyage. See http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/research/office-of-marine-operations/langseth for some information on the ship.
There are three tour times available on Tuesday (at 1:15, 1:45 and 2:15, i.e., right after our noon lecture) and each should last under an hour. Priority for the tours will be given to the 263/363 students, so that they can get back to their regularly scheduled lab session from 2-5. There is no transport organised to the harbour. We are planning to walk from the department.

Cheers,
Andrew
