I am now very familiar and tired with the traditional print form of narrative after three years of closely studying it, therefore my introduction to digital narratives was a welcomed relief. I found it to completely change my perspective on narrative and its definition. What I believe resonated so much with me was the level of interactivity the narratives offered.

Given my familiarity with the traditional form of narrative, I found myself relating best with texts which while involving user interaction did have a strong sense of narrative or sotry. These included the iPad text Pry, the digital fiction 18 Cadence by Aaron Reed and the interactive fiction Winchester’s Nightmare by Nick Montfort. All of these involved a high level of user action to reveal the narrative. These examples had a cleverly crafted story lines, as well as movement and interaction which created a great deal of the meaning. By being able to use movement, touch and user input, the level of meaning and understating is heightened from a regular reading experience. It is unlikely anyone would have the exact same narrative experience, this is due to digital narratives being somewhat grey. In a piece of Victorian literature for example it is black and white, the author has no real hidden agenda, the characters and narrative are presented in a straight forward manner. What appealed to me but might put others off was having to work to reveal the narrative, and in doing so creating your own version.

In this sense I believe Digital Literature is more relevant to our modern society. Nothing is black and white anymore and everything includes shades of grey. From gender binaries to child rearing, members of society now make their own decisions and create their own discourses, making everything much more grey. While some would argue the clarity of a black and white world is more so inviting then a grey one, I believe society needs to stay away from binaries to generate peace. I would also argue that a bit of ambiguity in literature is also very effective.

Personally, I believe digital narrative fits into a modern society more effectively. It is this reason which has encouraged me to believe that secondary schools should adopt more forms of digital literature into their curriculums. While being far more so engaging, the level of meaning these texts generate surpass many novels and short stories presently being taught. As I mentioned at the start, my definition of narrative has changed after this course and it was most definitely a welcomed and needed change to reignite my passion for literature.

The Positive “Greywash” on Society and Literature As someone who grew up in a household of boys who taught me from a young age that it was quite literally illegal for a girl to play play-station and having little interest in … Continue reading →

["post-236","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
