{"id":681,"date":"2014-10-02T09:24:03","date_gmt":"2014-10-01T20:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/crocc\/?p=681"},"modified":"2014-10-02T09:24:03","modified_gmt":"2014-10-01T20:24:03","slug":"marsden-collection-online-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/crocc\/marsden-collection-online-soon\/","title":{"rendered":"Marsden Collection Online Soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two hundred years ago (in December) Rev Samuel Marsden gave the first Christian service on New Zealand soil at Oihi Bay, in the Bay of Islands, and planted\u00a0the first group of missionaries before he sailed back to New South Wales. \u00a0This early missionary activity generated considerable paper records between the missionaries, marsden, and the Church Missionary Society.\u00a0 These comprise the\u00a0Marsden Papers at the Hocken Library, containing journals as well as hundred of letters. \u00a0For over 20 years, Gordon Parsonson, a former member of Otago&#8217;s\u00a0History Department &#8211; now aged 94, has been transcribing this hand-written material, some of which will soon go online.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/news\/dunedin\/317873\/access-marsden-thanks-historian\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to see a recent Otago Daily Times article<\/a>\u00a0on Gordon Parsonson.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ernz2014.eresearch.org.nz\/conference\/eresearch-nz-2014\/schedule\/what-a-mission-new-skills-and-services-that-support-humanities\" target=\"_blank\">digitization project<\/a> has been led by the University Library and Hocken Library, with considerable input from the Centre for Research on Colonial Culture.<\/p>\n<p>The Marsden project will go live in November, and will become a great resource for historians and other Humanities scholars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two hundred years ago (in December) Rev Samuel Marsden gave the first Christian service on New Zealand soil at Oihi Bay, in the Bay of Islands, and planted\u00a0the first group of missionaries before he sailed back to New South Wales.
