and Popular History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Centre was pleased to host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mq.edu.au\/about_us\/faculties_and_departments\/faculty_of_arts\/mhpir\/staff\/staff\/dr_tanya_evans\/\">Tanya Evans<\/a> of Macquarie University who gave a public lecture last week.\u00a0 While this was Tanya&#8217;s first trip to New Zealand, we also welcomed back a more regular visitor from Australia, Kristyn Harman (University of Tasmania) accompanied by her partner, Nick Brodie.<\/p>\n<p>Academics are encouraged to make their research more &#8220;impactful&#8221;, which for Humanities scholars is often to get their research out beyond the narrow academic enclaves we work in.\u00a0 Presentations from all of three of the visitors above were relevant to this theme.\u00a0 Tanya, Director of Macquarie&#8217;s\u00a0Research Centre for Applied History, discussed \u2018The Emotions of Family History\u2019, looking at why family historians and genealogists undertake their research, and how such research informs wider community understanding of, and individuals&#8217; emotional connection to the past.\u00a0 In her investigations, Tanya interacts with family historians, with her research having far more impact than that of more siloed academic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otago.ac.nz\/press\/books\/otago666289.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cleansing the Colony: Transporting Convicts from New Zealand to Van Diemen&#8217;s Land<\/em><\/a> (published by Otago University Press) which examines the more than 100 people sent from New Zealand into the Australian penal institutions.\u00a0 Kristyn also gave a lecture on these convicts to the Tuesday Club at Toit\u016b: Otago Settlers Museum last week.\u00a0 Although most of the Club are retired and from many walks of life, they were keen, attentive, and intellectually engaged, with Kristyn&#8217;s talk attracting their largest crowd of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Brodie is an established Australian popular historian, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/arts\/review\/nick-brodies-kin-frames-australian-history-in-family-tree\/news-story\/5f37bf72feddea3cc302cd46a6a228b6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardiegrant.com\/au\/publishing\/bookfinder\/book\/1787-by-nick-brodie\/9781743791608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1787<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardiegrant.com\/au\/publishing\/bookfinder\/book\/the-vandemonian-war-by-nick-brodie\/9781743793114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Vandemonian War.<\/a>\u00a0 Although he has his own academic background in history and archaeology, he now reaches a much larger market through well-researched but accessible books.\u00a0 Nick shared his own publishing experiences in a seminar to both staff and postgraduates at the university, with tips on how to make history relevant and engaging for non-academic
