A cross-cultural history of land and inheritance in Aotearoa\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Jane will be investigating two rural districts at different ends of the country, the Taieri in Otago and the Hokianga in Northland, looking at how people of various ethnic backgrounds owned and inherited land.\u00a0\u00a0 This project marks a shift in focus from Jane\u2019s previous research around her PhD topic on the <a href=\"http:\/\/kalimpongkids.org.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cKalimpong Kids\u201d<\/a> on teenage Indian migrants sent to New Zealand in the early twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p>Last week Centre director, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Professor Tony Ballantyne<\/strong><\/span> was awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalsociety.org.nz\/2016\/11\/23\/humanities-aronui-medal-reinterpreting-the-history-of-the-british-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Humanities Aronui Medal<\/a> by the Royal Society of New Zealand.\u00a0 This medal recognises his work over time in reshaping scholarly thought on British imperial history.\u00a0 In particular Tony has advanced the metaphor of \u201cwebs of empire\u201d to explain the nature of the British Empire, that it was less a wagon wheel, with London as the hub, and more like a spider web with multiple interconnections between nodes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Tony Ballantyne<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Humanities Aronui Medal<\/span>: For innovative work of outstanding merit in the humanities. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Citation<\/span>: To Anthony John Ballantyne for reshaping the scholarly interpretation of British imperial history by demonstrating the importance of networks, cultural difference and mobility, and reconstructing the centrality of colonialism and empires in the making of the modern world.<\/p>\n<p>We are also very pleased to note that Professor Hamish Spencer of Genetics Otago, who co-organized the CROCC symposium \u201c\u201cEugenics in British Colonial Contexts: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa\u201d in February 2015 was the recipient of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalsociety.org.nz\/2016\/11\/23\/callaghan-medal-bringing-ecological-science-into-the-marae-and-community\/\" target=\"_blank\">Callaghan Medal <\/a>\u201cfor an outstanding contribution to science communication and raising public awareness of the value of science to human progress\u201d for his work with with Ngai T\u0101manuhiri, and the people of Tolaga Bay\/Uawa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/crocc\/files\/2016\/11\/events-bwb-barbarabrookes.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1481 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/crocc\/files\/2016\/11\/events-bwb-barbarabrookes-300x207.jpeg\" alt=\"events-bwb-barbarabrookes\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" <span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>Professor Barbara Brookes<\/strong><\/span>\u2019,<a href=\"http:\/\/bwb.co.nz\/books\/a-history-of-new-zealand-women\" target=\"_blank\"><em> A History of New Zealand Women<\/em><\/a>, has been long-listed for the Illustrated Non-Fiction Award for the 2017 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalsociety.org.nz\/2016\/11\/22\/society-new-sponsor-of-ockham-new-zealand-book-awards-and-longlist-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ockham NZ Books Awards<\/a>.\u00a0 The judges will announce their shortlist on March 7 next year, and the winner will be announced on May 16 at the Auckland Writers Festival.\u00a0 Her book provides a wide-ranging and comprehensive history of New Zealand as seen from a female perspective.\u00a0 Barbara has long been a leader in the field of New Zealand women\u2019s history, with CROCC honouring her and her work at the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/crocc\/2016\/02\/19\/making-women-visible-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\">Making Women Visible\u201d conference<\/a> in February this
