On Thursday 29th, CROCC member Michael Stevens hosted a number of fellow members, and other guests at his home marae, Te Rau Aroha, at Bluff, to look at M\u0101ori\/maritime history and how this aligns with Michael’s Marsden-funded project, A World History of Bluff<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As well as visiting a number of the locales that inform Michael’s work, we were also able to give short presentations to local people at the marae on the Thursday evening.\u00a0 These included: Atholl Anderson (Retired, ANU): \u201cArchaeology in the Southern Margins\u201d; David Haines (Waitangi Tribunal): \u201cTuhawaiki\u2019s Cannon\u201d; Tony Ballantyne (Otago): \u201cAn Indian Sailor in the South\u201d; Jonathan West (OTS): \u201cA triangulated moment in the Tasman Triangle: Port Pegasus, 1826\u201d; Angela Wanhalla (Otago): \u201c\u2018Granny Harrold\u2019: The Transnational Life of an Indigenous Woman\u201d; Lachy Paterson (Otago): \u201cSouthern K\u0101i Tahu and M\u0101ori-language newspapers\u201d; and Jane McCabe (Otago): \u201cKalimpong Kids in Southland\u201d.\u00a0 Regular draws also saw a number of books given to attendees.<\/p>\n

There were several highlights.\u00a0 Serendipitously Sir T\u012bpene O’Regan, the upoko of the local Awarua R\u016bnaka was in town, and kept us entertained with stories on the Friday night.\u00a0 And on Saturday we were lucky to visit Stewart Island and visit several historical spots, including the “Travellers Rest”, a boarding house run by a Agnes Harrold, a nineteenth-century Metis woman from Manitoba.\u00a0 A big thank you to Michael and his wh\u0101nau for their hospitality, and the ringa wera at the marae who kept us so well well fed while we were there.<\/p>\n
