The Laboratory

Condensed-phase Astrochemistry

Gas-phase deposition of molecular thin films  onto cold substrate for RAIRS or transmission-IR studies:

Temperature: 12 – 300 K. Vacuum: base ca. 10-9 mbar. H2D2 Lamp for photolysis experiments (Hamamatsu L11798: 160 nm peak)

Thermo iG50 / external MCT / KBr optics: 5000 – 500 cm-1 @ 0.5 cm-1.

Vibrational Studies of Adsorbed Gas

The interaction between surface and guest gas species adsorbed to materials to be characterised by transmission-IR. Shifts in absorption bands can be attributed to gas-substrate interactions that are able to be predicted by periodic-DFT calculations

Specac High Pressure / High Temperature infrared cell and temperature controller

Temp: 293 – 500 K. Pressure: 10-5 mbar to 10 atm. N2/O2/CO2/CH4/C2H2 available

Thermo iG50 / external MCT / ZnSe optics: 5000 – 750 cm-1 @ 4 cm-1.

Suitable for MOF / HOF / molecular cage studies. Astrophysical mineral / catalytic surface adsorption studies (i.e. olivine gas binding).
