XRB Project<\/strong><\/td>\nClimate Disclosures and Environmental Accounting<\/a><\/td>\nPrincipal Investigator Dr Sebastian Gehricke<\/a><\/strong> and Associate Investigators Prof. Sara Walton<\/a> and Prof. Lisa Ellis<\/a> have just signed a research project contract with the External Reporting Board (XRB)<\/a><\/strong> titled “Effectiveness Evaluation of Aotearoa New Zealand\u2019s Climate-related Disclosure (CDS) Framework”<\/em> over 2.5 years. The project will develop and implement an evaluation of the effectiveness of the CDS framework on Climate Reporting Entities (CREs), Crown Financial Institutions (CFIs) and Primary Users with respect to entity decision-making, foresight and responsibility, and capital allocation.<\/p>\n

The request for expressions of interest only went to a selected group of potential providers, including the Climate and Energy Finance Group (CEFGroup)<\/strong><\/a>, showing the value of CEFGroup\u2019s engagement and public education efforts through activities such as guest lectures, seminars\/webinars and the annual Assembly of Investment Chairs<\/a><\/strong>. After several rounds comprising of EOI, a full proposal (one of three providers) and a 2-hour workshop (one of two providers) that felt like an oral examination, the cross-disciplinary Otago team was successful.<\/p>\n

FMAG project<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nCarbon, Energy & Electricity Markets<\/a><\/td>\nThe Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group (FMAG)<\/a><\/strong> provides independent advice to the Minister of Forestry on various forestry topics, including carbon offsetting through plantation and native forests in voluntary markets and the New Zealand Emission Trading Scheme (ETS).<\/p>\n

FMAG commissioned the Climate and Energy Finance Group<\/strong> <\/a>to conduct research to understand the demand for carbon offsetting and its drivers in New Zealand. The research<\/a> <\/strong>involves a systematic literature review and a survey to gauge the extent of carbon offsetting’s impact on the forestry sector. Updates and outcomes will be shared on the project website to keep stakeholders informed.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

STRAND Marsden Fund Project<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nStranded Assets Risk: Physical Climate Risk<\/a><\/td>\n\n

The STRAND Marsden Fund Project is an interdisciplinary Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund project ($869,000 between 2021 and 2024) exploring climate-change flooding-related risks to residential property values across space and time, and the related implications for financial stability. The project is led by Associate Professor Ivan Diaz-Rainey<\/strong><\/a> (Director, CEFGroup, University of Otago) and Associate Professor Antoni Moore<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(School of Surveying, University of Otago).\u00a0Dr Quyen Nguyen<\/strong><\/a>, as the STRAND Marsden Fund Project Postdoctoral Fellow, is the principal modeller on the project. \u00a0The other member of the team are \u00a0Dr Simon Cox<\/strong><\/a> (GNS Science), Dr Greg Bodeker<\/strong><\/a> (Bodeker Scientific) and Dr Paul Thorsnes<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(Department of Economics, University of Otago). Predicting and Forecasting Carbon Footprint for Climate Risk Analysis<\/b><\/td>\nCarbon, Energy & Electricity Markets<\/a><\/td>\n\n

CEFGroup<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/b>is helping the\u00a0<\/b>EMMI<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/b>team develop novel machine-learning approaches to estimate corporate carbon emissions in a timely manner, building on its work on Dr Quyen Nguyen<\/b><\/a>‘s paper:\u00a0“Predicting corporate carbon footprints for climate finance risk analyses: A machine learning approach<\/a><\/i><\/b>“.\u00a0EMMI<\/strong><\/a><\/b>\u00a0is leading the way in building a global standard to assess carbon financial risk for companies.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this study is to answer the following research question “What factors are associated with ethical investing choices in New Zealand?<\/em>” by analysing the survey data provided by Mindful Money<\/strong><\/a>. Who Owns the Emissions?<\/strong><\/td>\nSustainable Investments<\/a><\/td>\n\n

This project explores who owns the potential emissions embedded within fossil fuel reserves, by utilizing the list of the top 200 companies with embedded carbon assets, the carbon underground 200. The first article explores a point in time ownership of these companies by finding the ultimate owners and exploring their total potential emissions ownership and influence in the network of investors. This research is a collaboration between\u00a0Dr Sebastian Gehricke<\/strong><\/a> (Deputy Director, CEFGroup, University of Otago), Mr Truzaar Dordi<\/strong><\/a> (PhD Candidate, University of Waterloo<\/a>), Dr Alain Naef<\/span><\/a><\/strong> (Economist, Banque de France<\/a>) and Professor Olaf Weber<\/a><\/strong> (Research Chair in Sustainable Finance, University of Waterloo<\/a>). Work on the second article is exploring this stranded asset risk\u2019s impact on valuations and changes over time.<\/p>\n
