{"id":473,"date":"2021-05-06T14:52:01","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T02:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/anthnav\/?page_id=473"},"modified":"2021-05-06T15:00:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T03:00:14","slug":"careers-and-research-profiles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/anthnav\/about-social-anth\/careers-and-research-profiles\/","title":{"rendered":"Careers and Research Profiles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A degree in social anthropology can take you many places!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a discipline which encourages you to pursue your own interest areas because (as we highlight in our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/anthnav\/practicing-social-anthropology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Practicing<\/a> section) it gives you a transferable skill-set: from critical thinking, to interviewing, to writing techniques. Because of this, anthropologists are found not only in Universities (as a base for research and teaching), but employed in non-profit and community organisations, in government ministries, and in business and industry too.<\/p>\n<p>Social\/cultural anthropologists are interested in whatever it is that humans do, so it equips you to study social issues and ares of life relevant to people&#8217;s everyday lives &#8211; whether it&#8217;s researching the social importance of Facebook (like anthropologist Daniel Miller does in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sL4ipHiVhAY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this 5 min video<\/a>) or studying what it&#8217;s like to live with Haemophilia in NZ (which is just one of the research projects Professor Julie Park describes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-HlurwYA-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this 3.5min video<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/anthnav\/files\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-06-at-2.58.15-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-478 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.otago.ac.nz\/anthnav\/files\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-06-at-2.58.15-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a>Tricia Wang, for instance, is a &#8220;global-tech ethnographer&#8221;, helping turn &#8216;business questions&#8217; into &#8216;human&#8217; ones.
