Academic Leadership Development Programme

The Academic Leadership Development Programme (ALDP) was established in 2009.  It is part of Organisational Development in the HR Division.  The goal is to support the development of academic leaders in a wide range of roles across the University.  The programme focuses on personal, interpersonal and strategic leadership skills that align with the University of Otago Academic Leadership Framework.

Programme activities include workshops, mentoring, peer learning groups, leadership coaching and online resources. Many of the workshops are available by zoom and offered in collaboration with HEDC and Learning and Development. There are 4 programmes.

  • New Academic Heads Leadership Programme is an annual cohort of incoming Academic Heads of Department/Programme/School and Directors of Centre/Programme attending 5 days of courses over 12 months. Individual leaders also select relevant workshops in the Developing Academic Leadership Programme and Policy and Practice Series.

  • Associate Deans Programme includes an induction course and follow-up workshops with 2 days in the first 12 months.

  • Developing Academic Leadership Programme includes a wide range of workshops (1.5-3 hours) and courses (1-2 days) that are accessible to Associate Deans, Academic Heads and their academic staff (e.g. Course Convenors, chair of Committee, Principal Investigators, and future leaders). Professional staff in leadership roles attend some of these activities. All staff choose to attend workshops that are relevant for their role. Topics include; leading people, having accountability conversations, managing resources, making sound decisions, fostering a successful learning, teaching and research culture and managing energy, priorities and time.

  • Policy and Practice Series. Short sessions where subject matter experts outline key points from selected policies and there is the opportunity to ask questions. Short videos and resources are available on the Staff Development Blackboard Paper.

Resources for Early or Mid Career Academic or Researcher (EMCA/R) are also available here.

You can contact the Head of ALDP for advice, to plan your leadership development or to get access to the Staff Development Blackboard paper. (
